Named for the author of Don Quixote, who never visited Mexico, this is the biggest arts festival in the country. It takes place over a 2-3 week period in October and features world-class performers. Each year one country/region and one Mexican state are guests of honour. There are free open-air concerts every night, as well as performances at lunchtime and in the evening in the city's main theatres and the state auditorium, as well as in churches and historic haciendas. A detailed programme of events is usually posted online here in July. Tickets go on sale locally and online via Ticketmaster soon after.
