Filarmonica de Jalisco (Jalisco Filharmonic)
An absolute must, if you’re in Guadalajara when this orchestra is performing is to attend a concert of this wonderful orchestra. Concerts are Fridays at 8:30 pm and Sundays at 12:30 pm (matinees) at the beautiful Teatro Degollado. The teatro is a wonder in itself. For the current concert schedule, visit their website http://www.ofj.com.mx/. The schedule is not always available as soon as it should be so here it is:
Ticket prices are very reasonable compared to ticket prices in major cities in the US and Canada. Front row centre is 220 pesos p/p, with many tickets being much cheaper. Good seats are generally available at the last minute. Tickets can be obtained either at the box office at the Teatro Degollado (Calle Degollado, Av. Hidalgo & Calle Morelos in the historic centre), Thursday through Sunday, or at Ticketmaster locations.. (The closest Ticketmaster to the theatre is in the basement of the Fabrica de Francia. Store, a few blocks from the theatre.)
Under the direction of the dynamic conductor, Hector Guzman, each concert is skillfully balanced to include a range of compositions, making them enjoyable for everyone from musical newcomers to the most discriminating musician. They are also a good opportunity for non-Mexicans and Mexicans alike to hear the works of Mexican composers and internationally recognized Mexican guest performers alongside other great musicians and repertoire. Details of past and future concerts can be seen on the website (listed above).
For pre or post theatre refreshment, there is a very nice little café and patio attached to the Theatre which is open daily from 8:00 am—not just on concert days. The menu includes salads, desserts and main dishes, as well as alcohol and special coffees. Food is fresh, interestingly presented and reasonably priced. This restaurant is recommended even if one is not attending a concert.
