La plaza de Marichis today is lacking in good Mariachi. The restaurant (Mi Ranchito) that supported most of the bands may still be there but it no longer the center of activity that it once was. It is still a very interesting area. On one side is the church of San Juan de Dios, the patron curcrh on the mercado libertad. Locals still refer to Mercado Libertad as San Juan de Dios. On the other side of the market is the old orphanage that is now more of a museum and contains many of the murals of Orozco. It is worth the trip to this area even if the Mariachi are no longer there. In fact there may be an ocassional band in the area but the quality of the music is poor.
