Traveling along the Pacific Coast of Mexico, one will experience not only the culture of the Mexican people, but also the subcultures of the villages, towns, and cities along the way.  Here, we will focus on the culture of Mexico, but also the subcultures of the four main tourist destinations along the Pacific Coast: Mazatlan, Nuevo Vallarta, Puerto Vallarta, and Acapulco.

Mexico in general, which is part of the larger area known as Mesoamerica, has been home to many civilizations that have risen and fallen over the years (Mayans and Toltecs are two well known examples). Most of these ancient civilizations are long gone, but plenty of their traditions and influences remain with the people who today inhabit the areas.  Today, the culture seen throughout most of Mexico is a combination of Spanish influence and Native American traditions.  As one moves further south, more influence remains from the ancient times.
