There is a lot more to do in Freeport than just sunbathing and swimming in gorgeous tropical waters. Perhaps unsurprisingly, golf and fishing are the two fastest growing sports! If you decide to go out for a day of fishing, which you can easily and cheaply do just by going out to the marinas, you're almost guaranteed to have at least a few good catches. The Freeport waters are home to white and blue marlin, yellow-fin and blue-fin tuna, barracuda, and king fish among others. Real fishing enthusiasts: check out Deep Water Cay for 250 square miles of bone fish. It is located on the eastern end of Grand Bahama Island and you can get there by boat from McLean's town.
If you're a golfer, try the Fortune Hills Golf and Country Club. The daily fee for non-members starts at $35 and the course is known for the longest par 5 in all the Bahamas.
Water sports are an obvious option in Freeport and with water temperatures in the 70s, they certainly might be the best option. You have a lot to chose from! There are many "activity" beaches (such as Xanadu beach) on the island where you can go parasailing, snorkeling, windsurfing etc. If you're a sailor or just a sailboat-admirer check out Taino Beach in June: it annually hosts the Grand Bahama Sailing Regatta. Not only will you get to see some astonishing, traditional Bahamian boats, but you will also be able to enjoy a number of parades and festivals set up expressely for this event. For more information you can call 242 352 9338.
Discovering new beaches is also a great way to spend time on your vacation. You'll discover miles and miles of pristine, quiet beaches - especially on the southeastern and southwestern sides of the island. You MUST visit
Gold Rock Beach before you leave. You'll be so happy you did.
