Emancipation Garden, on St. Thomas, does NOT commemorate Abe Lincoln's emancipation of the slaves in the states. The emancipation referred to here is that declared by then-governor Peter von Scholten, that "All unfree in the Danish West Indies are, from today, free." This declaration was made on July 3, 1848, on the neighboring island of St. Croix, after an uprising of the slaves.
