The port city of Charlotte Amalie is not only the capital of St. Thomas, but the capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Because of this, it has a rather large shopping area with numerous shops and boutiques, as well as other stores and restaurants. If you are looking for jewelry it is probably one of the best places in the world to find what you want, and at a reasonable price! It is also a large port for cruise ships. Every day anywhere from 3-5 cruise ships could be docked in the harbor during the high season (November-April), but they will generally leave by nightfall. Because of this influx of tourists during the day, Charlotte Amalie can turn into a hectic market place from the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on cruise ship days.

There are a number of high end shops that sell rare and expensive arts and jewelry, but there are also opportunities to buy inexpensive gifts. Located just to the right of the main shopping district is a large open air market where locals can sell their goods. Anything from t-shirts to hemp necklaces can be bought here inexpensively. You can also haggle with the vendors and try to bring prices down. That is something you can't do in the shops.

While there are some big name stores downtown, such as Little Switzerland, Royal Caribbean, Boolchand's, and Polo, there are also local shops to choose from. The Olga Glove Boutique has opened a store offering leather and fine fashion gloves in Palm Passage.

A new shopping area in Charlotte Amalie is Yacht Haven Grande Galleria. There you can find designer stores (Louis Vuitton, BCBG, Bulgari) along with some smaller local boutiques.

The Havensight Mall and the Crown Bay Center are the two shopping areas next to the two cruise ship docks. You will find many of the same stores as downtown there.
