Christiansted offers visitors many fun family-friendly activities from snorkeling to boating, fishing, and even shopping, but St. Croix's natural beauty and history will provide perhaps the best family memories. Salt River Bay National Historical Park, run by the US National Park Service, is the only National Park which can claim to cover an area where Christopher Columbus actually landed. Salt River's ecological preserve has also protected over a thousand of acres of tropical mangrove forests, archaeological sites, wildlife, and coral reefs.
The park is located five miles from Christianized and is easy to get to by car. Maps are available at most hotels and car rental agencies. Salt River park rangers offer visitors guided tours either on foot, or by snorkeling, kayaking, or scuba diving. More information about tours and the park itself can be at the Christiansted National Historic Site in Christiansted. Salt River does not at this time offer camp sites or other lodging.
