The River Estate was once a large sugarcane and cocoa plantations. Most of the Diego Martin valley was at one time used to grow sugarcane. All that remains now is a large cast iron waterwheel and some copper kettles. The waterwheel was used to drive rollers which crushed the sugarcane and the copper kettles were used to boil and purify the sugar solution.

In addition there is a small very well maintained museum showing the sugarcane and cocoa production process.
