Something that first-time visitors to this little spot in the Caribbean might want to bear in mind is, that because you are on vacation, hopefully the word "fast" is not essential to your vocabulary...
Most things on Nevis move at a slow pace, and you may possibly encounter a few waiting lines, because everyone here still takes their time, and chats. If you like things to move fast, and are looking for fast night life, fast casinos, or even fast women, you should probably go somewhere else; the only thing that's fast on Nevis is the Horse Racing, and even at the Racetrack there's a lot of time between races to relax.
During your first trip, definitely take an island tour. This takes you all the way around the island, and you can see how big 36 square miles really is. It will also help you plan what else you want to see. Shoppers might want to check out the numerous small places hidden around Charlestown. History buffs will probably want to go to the Museums, the various Plantation Inns, or even the Nevis Heritage Village.
On your tour you will also start to see that much of Nevis is "bush". On that mountain there is a lovely rain forest for hiking into, and there is lots of interesting 19th century sugar-extracting machinery hidden in the shrubbery. Adventure and lovely views await as you visit all the different beaches. Snorkeling and diving on Nevis may not be the absolute best in the West Indies, but it's up there with them.
Restaurants? Your choice. A popular local casual spot would be Sunshine's but Rumours is trying. Another great beach bar is Chevy's Beach Bar located on Pinney's Beach.
For a special occasion, any of the hotels will be glad to accomodate whatever you need (as long as it is legal:)).
