The steepest parts of the mountain are covered in rain forest, and at the highest altitudes, cloud forest. The peak makes a beautiful backdrop to almost all activities on Nevis, and is one of the many things that makes Nevis so picturesque. The peak attracts quite a lot of rain, and this rainwater feeds all of the numerous freshwater wells and springs on Nevis.
The mountain is home to a wide variety of interesting native birds, butterflies, wildflowers, and so on, and also serves as home to countless troops of Green Vervet monkeys, an introduced species which has flourished on Nevis for the last few hundred years. The monkeys tend to be shy of humans, but are very interested in the fruit that is grown in people's gardens, and in the numerous cultivated and half-wild Mango trees which are found all over the island.
It is possible to go on all kinds of interesting walks, and hikes, and mountain-bike riding, on the less steep slopes of the mountain. Some of these walks are very pleasant and easy, but nonetheless they are interesting and rewarding and will very much enrich your experience of Nevis.
For those who are interested in hiking all the way to the top of Nevis Peak, this is also a great adventure; it is however a long hike which definitely requires a guide, and it involves some difficult sections, so it is not suitable for the faint-hearted.
