The last remaining "working" vestige of the sugar industry on St. Kitts is now the St. Kitts Scenic Railway (SKSR). The narrow gauge (30-inch) railway excursion trains run on the same tracks that the SSMC used to bring cane from the surrounding estate fields into the factory. The SKSR uses modern double-decked air conditioned railcars, and the tour runs 18 miles from Needsmust Station out to La Valle Transfer Station. At this point passengers transfer from the train to a fleet of modern air conditioned sightseeing highway buses for the 12-mile trip on the Main Road into Basseterre, making a complete 30-mile circle tour of the whole island.
The SKSR began running trains in January 2003. They now operates year-around, and their rail tours are sold on board all of the cruise ships that call into St. Kitts. The St. Kitts "Sugar Train" is the last railway operation left in the West Indies.
