Hell is a small town on Grand Cayman (short drive from hotels) that has a post office/gift shop and little else to brag about. Plenty of T-shirts, post cards, mugs, the usual tourist type items. The best part of the post office/gift shop is its location and statue of a devil. Be sure to get a photo with the little devil.
Just behind the shop is the ocean with a very jagged shoreline of lava rock... which is how Hell got its name. Do NOT try walking on this without sturdy shoes.
Other points of interest would include Seven Mile Beach (which can be accessed at a variety of public access locations- a paricularily good spot is Cemetery Beach in West Bay), Stingray City and Queen Elizabeth Memorial Gardens.
The food is excellent and conch fritters are fantastic. The local food is excellent so avoid the pricey resort fare.
When traveling there in the mid-nineties it wasn't uncommon to still be able to hitchhike all over the island, which is quite small. The locals are very friendly and helpful and the crime rate is near 0 so if you are considering a laidback vacation, then Grand Cayman is worth consideration. in 2009 it's still OK to hitch hike as it's a laid back island, but I would not suggest that single females hitch hike. There are now buses which are transit vans that carry about 12 people at a time, and these are a good experience as you meet a few locals and also Jamaicans who use these busses for their everyday transport. The flat fee is 3USD which you pay when you leave. the buses can be a little hard to spot as their only distinguishing feature is their blue lience tag and a dot on the front below the windscreen. But what's good is that if you start walking, you are likely to be beeped at by passing bus drivers to ask if you want to hop on board. You can hail these busses from anywhere, although there are a few bus stops, and also get off anywhere - you just have to shout 'stop please' at the driver. Some drivers will even go off route for you. As for taxis, these are similar vehicles. Taxi drivers will often pick up more than one ride at a time - and they charge more for each additional person in your party, and they are expensive. What's nice is that a lot of the taxi drivers in Cayman are female.
