The beaches alone on Tortola could keep you occupied for an entire vacation. Some of the most popular beaches are Cane Garden Bay, which is protected from heavy winds and therefore ideal for boating, windsurfing, swimming and many other aquatic sports. Surfers also like Apple Bay Beach, which is located near Bomba’s Shack. At either location, music wafts down to the sea from hotels and restaurants at night, making both beaches good for people watching and heavy activity.
Smuggler's Cove is one of the most beautiful beaches in the BVI, less crowded, crystal clear waters, decent snorkeling and sparkling white sands, and is on the Northern End of the island. In former days, Smuggler's Cove was a home base for pirates, thus it's name, today it retains it's scerenity and quiet atmosphere.
There are many water-related sports and activities that can be enjoyed on Tortola: Kayaking, fishing (requires a permit if you plan on going out on the water), whale-watching or sailing (the BVI is renown for some of the best sailing in the entire Caribbean) are just a few of the more popular ones. If you happen to be in Tortola at the right time of year, attend one of the sailing Regattas held on the islands. There are other festivals and events as well, including rather rowdy Full Moon parties at Bomba’s Shack, music festivals, an annual Easter festival, The Emancipation Festival (held from July - Early August every year) and special Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations.
Large areas of the Virgin Islands have also been declared wildlife sanctuaries or protected areas, so you can also take a nature hike to look for some beautiful views, trails and foliage. On Tortola a hike through Sage Mountain National Park is a must do as well as a visit to the Botanical Garden's with some of the most beautiful flowers and plants to be found.
