General Safety in Puerto Rico
Odds are that you have heard that Puerto Rico has a very high crime rate and that Puerto Rico is one of the most dangerous places in the World. It' s somewhat true - but many of the crimes and murders that do occur are in between people that are related with the drug world. It is very odd to hear that someone completely innocent was killed or that someone was kidnapped. Honestly, you have a higher chance of being kidnapped or attacked where you are from then on your trip to Puerto Rico. When you visit Puerto Rico, dont feel like you have to leave your jewlery at home, or walk around with a bullet proof vest. If you take the same precautions you take back home, nothing will go wrong...
Vieques Island
As on any other Carribean Island, you must be careful of your surroundings. When you go to the beach leave your valuables locked in the hotel safe or in the safe in your room. Never leave any bags or anything of value lying on the beach as petty thieves can be around and you may not see them. Never leave anything valuable in your car as they break into cars as well. The area itself is very safe, especially in Esperanza.
But, never leave with anybody that you don't know or go off into an area where you are unfamiliar. Most of the beach areas close at sunset and the Vieques police do patrol the streets, but like on any island, common sense is the rule of thumb.
