Definitely try to get out, explore the towns and countryside; experience the local atmosphere. You should not have to fear for your safety...the same rules apply as back home...don’t wear expensive jewellery or carry lots of cash, don’t walk in isolated areas especially at night and just be street smart.  People that may live in the bigger cities may feel more comfortable than those from a smaller town. The "higglers" are aggressive but usually a firm "no thank you" will sent them on their way.

One way to travel around Jamaica is by the route taxis. Make sure you look for taxis that have a red license will also say Route Taxi on the doors and show the route description. Always make sure that you check the fee with locals before you get into the taxi!! they, like bus fares are fixed by government and non negotiable.

Another way to get around is by bus or mini bus which operate in a similar way to the route taxis. All can be overcrowded and cramped at times so consider alternatives before taking long journeys.

Hiring your own driver (a private charter) is a more comfortable alternative and leaves you in full control, but is more expensive. Price is negotiable and should be set before entering the vehicle. For driver recommendations in different parts of Jamaica, do a search on the local forum for the area where you are based or look for local Inside pages.
