Punta Cana - Bavaro has developed over the past decade into the leading destination in the Caribbean. Gone are the days when you could hardly leave the resort due to poor roads and directions. Most main roads in the region now sport fresh hard-top, although signage can be a bit confusing at times.

You have many options for seeing what makes the region what it is...and what it was! Organized tours, both based on mass travel and small group travel are available and highly recommended for those visiting for the first time. Independent travel is best left to those vacationers with a few trips here under their belts. A good representation of car rental facilities now exist, but again....UNLESS you understand Dominican driving...best try another option.

The region now has local bus service that circles the area. Just stand on the side of the road and see what happens. Guaguas are usually older Toyota 30 seater buses and are a very cheap way to get from point A to B. You can tell the driver where you want to go and he will drop you off accordingly.

The new Autopista (expressway) between Punta Cana and La Romana means that a day trip to La Romana and Bayahibe are now within easy reach!
