Bonaire is a great place to snorkel. The island is surrounded by an underwater marine park. When you arrive on Bonaire you should purchase a dive or snorkel "tag". The cost is minimal and it makes for a great souvenir. The price for a non diver is 10.00 USD and 25.00 for a scuba diver. Well spent considering the integrity of the beaches and waters. Immaculate. What other Caribbean Harbour can one dive? The money goes toward protecting the parks. Try wearing dive skins while you snorkel to protect you from the sun and the occasional jellyfish.
You can't go wrong at the following spots:
1) Andrea and II
2) "hidden beach". It is an unmarked site that is just north of red slave. The reef at Hidden Beach is close to shore, so you won't have to kick far before seeing some amazing critters.
3) "the airport". Directly across from the airport you will see a yellow building. Drive out to the building and park. Walk down to the water and you'll see a nice little beach for entry. There are large brain corals and lots of fish. It is a pretty nice little snorkel for being right by the airport.
There are over 50 shore sites to dive or snorkel so if some dive the snorkeler can join in. A truck is essential for getting about and is about 200.00 USD per week.
If you like diving and snorkeling, then Bonaire is the perfect place. Bonaire is also windsurfer's heaven. The constant onshore winds, gin clear water and shallow bay make Lac Bay the most sought after setting for windsurfers in the Caribbean. The island is known for having one of the world's best teams in freestyle. On site are two amazing schools / shops and two super dining spots. There is plenty of shade and chairs as well as a calm swimming area. Sundays are quite busy as this area is a favorite with Dutch locals.
A great thing to do is a sailing charter (mostly in combination with a snorkelling stop as well..). The Aquaspace Trimaran (back on Bonaire mid-2008!) also has an amazing underwater observation capsule. Excellent combo of sailing, snorkelling and experiencing the underwater life, a must-see on the island.
