Bonaire is a fairly safe place to visit. Having said this, there are certain precautions that visitors to the area should take in order to ensure a smooth trip to the Caribbean. Like always, common sense is the best tool for staying safe.
Avoid traveling alone at night. This is a general recommendation for any unfamiliar area, but should be followed in Bonaire as well. Women should especially be conscious of this issue, and if traveling with others is not an option, take safe modes of transportation like cars or taxis.
Petty street crime does occur, and visitors should take certain precautions. Don’t carry around large amounts of money, and avoid wearing expensive jewelry or looking flashy. Drawing un-needed attention to one’s self is never a good idea. Try blending into the crowd instead of sticking out.
Valuables should never be left unattended at the beach. Even leaving irreplaceable items in hotel rooms is not a wise decision. Instead, see if the hotel has a security lock box available. If not, store the valuables with the hotel’s front desk, but make sure to obtain an itemized receipt before leaving the valuables behind.
If you are using a rental car, do not park it with the windows up or lock it. Never do that when you are parked at a shore dive spot, and it is a good suggestion for all times.
In case of an emergency situation, dial 911 from any phone.
