Whale & Dolphin watching - Mirissa
Whale & dolphin sighthings can be witnessed every year during the months of November to April in Mirissa. Another place for Dolphin watching during this time is in Kalpitiya, but in order to witness whales, one must venture deep into the Ocean.
Blue & sperm whales are the most common species & there're some occassional sightings of killer whales, humpback whales, etc. Spinner dolphins can be witnessed in both the locations but the pink dolphins can only be seen in Kalpitiya.
It's very sad to say that Whale watching is still not regulated by the Wildlife department or by any other government agency. Therefore at the moement there're lots of fisheries boats that take out tourists in order to show them this spectacular. However the Sri Lankan Navy inspects all the boats when it comes to security measures (life jackets, etc).
Once the boats are in the middle of the sea, they speed away at the sight of a whale or a dolphin with no regard to the animals' freedom & safety. Incidents are reported where the whales have been injured due to these boats & also they get scared when all the boats come in from all the directions to them.
It would be nice to see a wildlife official in every boat like the ones in all the national parks making sure that the tourists get all the correct information required & as well as the animals are not disturbed in thier natural habitat.
