  • Major features: ancient buildings, art museums, the Vatican, piazzas, cultural events
  • 106,971 TripAdvisor reviews of 4,113 accommodations, 554 attractions and 1,656 restaurants
"When in Rome, do as the Romans." That classic advice leads to a wealth of options: Should you follow Augustus and Caesar, whose Rome is filled with spectacular ancient structures? Or Michelangelo and Da Vinci, whose city invites artistic pilgrimage? Maybe you'll discover the Rome that enchants lovers and sightseers alike? Rome encompasses all this and more.
Acapulco, Mexico
  • Resident population: 616,394 Annual visitors: 5,000,000 (est.)
  • Major features: beaches, water sports, nightlife
  • 4,040 TripAdvisor reviews of 284 accommodations, 68 attractions and 134 restaurants
Mountain views, raucous nightlife and a C-shaped bay with a plethora of beaches make Acapulco a more upscale, yet reasonably priced, escape than its spring-break cousin, Cancun.
Atlantic City, New Jersey
  • Resident population: 39,408 (est.)
  • Major features: The Boardwalk, casinos, beaches
  • 7,130 TripAdvisor reviews of 72 accommodations, 39 attractions and 281 restaurants
It's the East Coast's answer to Las Vegas. Atlantic City's casinos draw tourists by the car- and bus-load, but even if your main objective is to play some blackjack, you'll want to save time for sightseeing.
Sardinia, Italy
  • Resident population: 1,655,677 Annual visitors: 12,000,000 (est.)
  • Major features: beaches, caves and grottoes, forest scenery
  • 13,224 TripAdvisor reviews of 1,393 accommodations, 81 attractions and 281 restaurants
The second-largest island in Mediterranean after Sicily, Sardinia serves up a lovely blend of sea, sand and history. Thousands of nuraghe (stone buildings) dot the landscape, proof that people have been enjoying the lovely climate here for millennia.
Benidorm, Spain
  • Resident population: 66,902 Annual visitors: 2,457,000 (est.)
  • Major features: beaches, nightlife, theme parks
  • 9,854 TripAdvisor reviews of 301 accommodations, 16 attractions and 188 restaurants
Bask on four miles of golden beaches, hit the Mediterranean Sea on water skis or stroll along Benidorm's promenade and revel in its seaside charms; it's a true Spanish beauty of the Costa Blanca.
