Almost all residents and workers have been evacuated from the popular scenic region of Big Sur. A 30-mile stretch of coastal Highway 1 has been closed. The blaze has already burned more than 64,000 acres of forest. Another major fire in the Ventana Wilderness and the Los Padres National Forest has also forced evacuations.

You won't need wheels at the auto-free Third Street Promenade, a stroller's paradise known for its multitude of movie theaters, restaurants and animated street performers.
