Almost all residents and workers have been evacuated from the popular scenic region of Big Sur. A 30-mile stretch of coastal Highway 1 has been closed. The blaze has already burned more than 64,000 acres of forest. Another major fire in the Ventana Wilderness and the Los Padres National Forest has also forced evacuations.

Staying here to visit Yosemite is like staying in San Diego to go to Disneyland - you can do it, but be prepared to be in the car a lot. Yes, it is close to one of the gates, but that particular gate...more
