レジャーで出かけるなら辺鄙な田舎町で遊ぶ場所はゼロ。面白くもおかしくもないところだが、仏教史あるいは遺跡・景観に興味があるなら必ず行くべき。個人的には、観光地化されたアンコールワットより、アヌラーダプラの寺院に大きな魅力を感じる。特に、ジェトバナの巨大仏塔。水牛がのんびり草を食む田んぼの向こうに大きな土饅頭がぬっと現れる風景には感動する。アプローチは、駅から聖菩提樹に向かう通り。右手に見える。暑くて大変だけれど、トゥクトゥクなんか使わないで、徒歩か貸し自転車で回りたい。（セイロンでトゥクトゥクを雇うと、おひとよしの日本人はまず倍、下手をすると五倍六倍の金をふんだくられる。半日ハイヤーすれば言い値はおそらく二千ルピーはくだらない。あいだに紹介屋が入っている場合は四五千ルピー。けれども厳しく交渉すれば八百ルピーぐらいまでは簡単にさがる。もともとトゥクトゥクは供給過剰で日に八百ルピーを稼ぐトゥクトゥクドライバーなんていないのだから。ただし、観光シーズン中は料金交渉が少々難しくなるかもしれない。）指定区域に立ち入るには２５USドルと何とも馬鹿馬鹿しい入場料をとられる。だから遺跡に面白みを感じない人は、例の風景を楽しんだあと、そのまま進んで無料で入れる聖菩提樹の寺（お釈迦さんが悟ったという、あの菩提樹から枝わけして持ってきた菩提樹の植わっている寺）だけ見て帰るのも手だろう。 more
