クアラルンプールから東海岸をバスで北上して、タイへ陸路で入国する前のほんの中継地点として立ち寄ったコタバルですが、とても居心地のいい場所でつい長居してしまう、そんな町でした。 これといった有名な観光名所もなく、しかし人々の暮らしを見るのが好きな私にはとても楽しかったです。 マレーシアの中でもイスラム教色の強いところで、多くのマレー系の女性はカラフルな民族衣装やスカーフに身を包んだ姿が印象的でした。男性もイスラムの帽子のようなもの(ソンコッと呼ぶそうです)を身に付けているのをよく見かけました。 初めての女一人旅で、バンコクから南下してマレーシアに入り、ペナン~クアラルンプールと移動する中で、少々恐い目にも遭いましたが、コタバルに着いてみると、猛烈な客引きがいなかったことや、人々が外国人である私にあまり関心を示さないので、それがかえって印象的で、また少しほっとしたのを覚えています。 コタバルで泊まったゲストハウスのスタッフに「ブルーライス(青いごはん!)を見せてあげる」と言われてナイトマーケットで食べたのが、マレー語で「ナシ・クラブ(ナシはごはん、クラブは野菜です)」というもので、青色は日本で言うあさがおのような花を使って色づけしているそうです。 コタバルで、めずらしい食べ物にたくさん出会いました。コタバルはマレーシア人も認めるほど、マレーシアのなかでも食事がおいしく、そして安いんだそうです。もちろん中華・インド系のレストランもありますし、タイと近いだけあっておいしいタイ料理のレストランも教えてもらいました。 セントラルマーケットで色とりどりの野菜や果物、地元のお菓子などをみて楽しむのもおすすめです。 とても庶民的な町で有名な観光スポットはないけれど、彼らの文化や生活に興味をもって話しかけると笑顔でこたえてくれて、とても楽しく過ごすことができました。 ぜひあなたも、コタバルを訪れてマレーシアの文化を感じてみてください。 more
