Paphos, Cyprus
  • Resident population: 27,000 (est.)
  • Major features: historic buildings, beaches
  • 9,309 TripAdvisor reviews of 411 accommodations, 21 attractions and 79 restaurants
Paphos, the capital of western Cyprus, has some serious historical clout. Site of the vast fourth-century BC Tombs of the Kings, set high on a cliff above the sparkling sea, as well as a dramatic Byzantine castle and fine mosaics, it's also known as the birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite.
  • Resident population: 396,334 Annual visitors: 676,000 (est.)
  • Major features: beach resorts, water sports, coral reefs
  • 11,505 TripAdvisor reviews of 171 accommodations, 16 attractions and 55 restaurants
A cluster of idyllic atolls in the Indian Ocean, about 200 of the Maldives' 1200 islets are inhabited. Another 100 are private resort islands.
Acapulco, Mexico
  • Resident population: 616,394 Annual visitors: 5,000,000 (est.)
  • Major features: beaches, water sports, nightlife
  • 4,035 TripAdvisor reviews of 285 accommodations, 68 attractions and 134 restaurants
Mountain views, raucous nightlife and a C-shaped bay with a plethora of beaches make Acapulco a more upscale, yet reasonably priced, escape than its spring-break cousin, Cancun.
Istanbul, Turkey
  • Resident population: 12,569,041 Annual visitors: 3,994,000 (est.)
  • Major features: mosques, Turkish baths, palaces, nightlife, bazaars
  • 26,054 TripAdvisor reviews of 748 accommodations, 149 attractions and 863 restaurants
Historic and modern, European and Asian — that's Istanbul. The city at the junction of two continents is home to ancient structures like the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque in the Old City, as well as modern businesses, hotels, restaurants and nightlife in the New City.
Venice, Italy
  • Resident population: 268,993 Annual visitors: 2,927,000 (est.)
  • Major features: canals, museums, piazzas, architecture, bridges
  • 48,320 TripAdvisor reviews of 1,397 accommodations, 183 attractions and 527 restaurants
Venice makes you a believer in fairy tales. Cars are banned, so the only way to get around the 1,500-year-old city is by foot or by water.
