Visiting Porto, Portugal

The town that gave the country (and port wine) its very name, Porto is Portugal’s second-largest metropolis after Lisbon. Sometimes called Oporto, it's an age-old city that has one foot firmly in the industrial present. The old town, centered at Ribeira, was built on the hills overlooking the Douro River, and today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 14th-century São Francisco church is a main attraction, as are the local port wine cellars, mostly located across the river at Vila Nova de Gaia.

I cannot praise Chef Gomes' efforts highly enough. This restaurant is tucked away in a residential-beach zone far away from the city centre but it is clearly worth a taxi ride (approximately 5 to 11...more

I fail to understand the reason for all that hype about this restaurant. It looks as if it capitalises on its former glory. The decor is ugly and dated, choices are limited -- also it has to be noted...more

Mercure Porto Centro

4 of 5 stars
Strasbourg, France
Nov 8, 2009

The hotel is a standard-issue Mercure: a nondescript 70s building with small square windows, a bit dated, rooms neither too large nor too small, quite comfortable for the price. However, it is worth...more
