Aquileiaはローマ帝国時代にイタリアで第4番目に建設された都市。 駐車場からは神社の参道のような木立に囲まれた細い道を700m程歩く。途中ローマ時代の遺跡が散見される。 聖堂はロマネスク時代の最も立派で重要な記念建造物の一つ。 平行して建てられた2つの会堂が一本の通路でつらなっている、主要な中核部分は313年に建造されたもの。1909年にこの聖堂の床を覆うモザイクが発見された。4世紀初期の初期キリスト教時代の今に残る一番大きなモザイクである。図柄は素朴で動物、魚類の図柄が多く、9枚のパネルに大きく分けられる。 ここでは時の歩みが格別遅いように感じられる。処々に残る壊れた柱や建物の基礎、石塔等が一層その気分を助長する。 more
