With one of the largest game concentrations in Africa, Chobe in northwest Botswana was the country's first national park and is one of the oldest safari areas in southern Africa. The park consists of four basic ecosystems: greenery along the Chobe River in the northeast, Savuti marshland in the west, Linyati swampland in the northwest, and hot and dry backcountry in between. Chobe is best known for its massive elephant population, estimated at about 60,000, or half of all that live in Botswana.
