A small Patagonian village on the shores of the breathtakingly blue Lago Argentino, El Calafate is known as the national capital of the glaciers. Boat excursions are available to witness ice cracking and glaciers "calving" in Los Glaciares National Park. The National Park also has viewing platforms and easy trails to get up close to the glaciers. Paved roads lead to the far side of Lago Argentino and to Rio Gallegos. Buses take dirt roads to other destinations, such as Esquel and Comodoro.
