Situated in the foothills of the Andes and surrounded by lakes, San Carlos is best known for its famed fruit-filled chocolates and as the site of the biggest ski area in South America. But it is also an excellent destination for water sports, trekking and climbing. Beaches like Playa Bonita and Villa Tacul are stunning, but the water temperature in Lake Nahuel Huapi is a chilling summer average of only 57°F. Avoid the city in July when the town is inundated by high school students.
