“Idyllic, romantic perfect for those wanting to get out of the rat race”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2008

We spent a couple of nights at Merribrook last week and it was the highlight of our visit to the Margaret River region, WA. The setting is perfect, secluded, set amongst acres of private land – there is a walking track around the property. The cottages are beautiful, glass fronted overlooking the lake. Utmost attention to detail is paid to the grounds, gardens, everything is alive with nature.
The breakfast is fabulous, the bed is divine, the owners beautiful and what more can I say, just wonderful…everything you would need to get away from city noise.
I would also highly recommend Cape Grace winery – tucked away, around 15 minutes away from Merribrook, delectable wines, this winery raises the standard of Margaret River wines.

Quiet, peaceful and in the middle of nowhere. If that's what you're looking for, this is the place for you. The cottages were comfortable and relatively private. There's a nice pool and a sauna by the lake (if you can manage to get a fire going). There were even kangaroos hopping along the road at night (and possibly knocking on the room windows in the early morn - hard to be sure). We got a jug of fresh rain water on arrival - delicious. I would however agree with some previous reviews: a bit overpriced for what you get, but beautiful nonetheless.

  • Liked — The fresh rainwater.
  • Disliked — The bathtub uses fresh lake water. A bit dirty.

As you travel to Merribrook you are struck by it's peaceful and rural location.

Lisa and I stayed at Merribrook for three days in February and were lucky enough to stay in the Secluded Lake House, on an 'Indulgence' package which included delicious gourmet platters and excellent massages in the privacy of your own lodge.

The Lake House is beautiful, modern, clean and luxuriously appointed,in the midst of the most scenic grounds.

The Main lodge, gardens and Lake are equally enchanting. With wildlife in abundance and the balance between privacy and a warm relaxed friendly atmosphere has been perfectly acheived.

Food is home cooked to an excellent standard.

The owners Lorraine, Richard and their family have clearly invested much time and Love into Merribrook and testimony to this is the total harmony and health of the nature and wildlife. It made for a magical stay...so much so in fact that we got engaged by the Lake!

I have noted some reviews state that it is not luxurious enough. We both travel extensively and stay in top end hotels most of the time.
Whilst Merribrook may not be ultra cool and ultra chic, it was the most luxurious and relaxing place we have stayed, for all the reasons described above. I can only speak for the Lake House and have not seen the Chalets, but I could not fault anything about it. The decor was exclusive and tasteful, everthing was in excellent order and working and it sat unobtrusively in beautiful surroundings. We would return here above all the city chic anyday.

During the rest of our 6 weeks in Australia we stayed in numerous hotels including Establishment in Sydney and the Duxton in Perth, and whilst they were great hotels, Merribrook is the one we wished we had stayed at longer.

If you love nature and luxury without the snobbery, falsity and clinical approach of so many so called luxury resorts then Merribrook's Lake House will not disappoint.

  • Liked — The atmosphere and the nature..........
  • Disliked — Poor Mobile phone coverage...which I would say is a plus!

I didn't know much about this property before my stay but it was recommended to me by a friend as somewhere special to visit. The accomodation was refurbished and very luxurious - totally private and very peaceful. The grounds, walking trails and pool were perfect for a break away and we felt a million miles away from reality. Great, friendly staff and our stay felt personal and not like a big run of the mill resort. Highly recommended.

I have just spent a weekend at Merribrook and came away with mixed feelings. The location / setting was great and the hosts very friendly and accommodating, however the Lake View room in which we stayed was disappointing and definitely not at a luxury standard i.e. queen size bed and walking paths that went in front of other rooms.

I had intended on booking the Lake House with king size bed and outdoor bath/spa but it was not available. If you are looking for a romantic get away with a little something special I would only opt for the Lake House. Alternatively consider the Empire Retreat, which for the same price has more privacy, better appointments and an outdoor shower.

We didn't really know what to expect of this place, but came away thinking it is a real gem; we would have happily stayed there for our entire 5-night stay in the area, and would definitely stay there again. We stayed 3 nights in a Lakeview Villa over easter for a very reasonable price, given what the property offers. Note however that this is not a full-service hotel, it is a retreat - no concierge, no laundry service, no in-room phone, no restaurant, etc. However, the service is terrific - personal and warm.

First, the property itself is in a beautiful setting - the owners bought the place (I think 160 acres) in the 1980's to keep as a nature preserve, and today it has towering trees, shady lawns, a lake, many species of birds (with gorgeous birdsong that can be heard at all times of day), kangaroos, and other wildlife. The main lodge has a stunning view over the main lawn and lake. The villas are set around the lodge and are very private.

Second, the facilities were very comfortable (though not in the luxury category). Our villa had a deep soaking tub, comfortable bed and DVD player. The main lodge has a lovely terrace with tables and sun lounger. There is also a good-size unheated pool and lounge area, as well as walking trails around the grounds.

Third, the service was excellent. Though there is no concierge to arrange activities - and one has to expect this, or be disappointed - the reception was efficient and the breakfast service very good (a generous cold and hot breakfast cooked to order and served on the terrace is included). One of the very warm and personable owners, Lorraine, was there during our stay and served each of the guests personally.

In sum, we found this to be a beautiful and relaxing place, and a convenient base from which to explore the area, as the property is near Cowaramup, in between Dunsborough in the north and Margaret River town in the south. The only real inconvenience for potential visitors is the phone service - there is no cellular coverage on the property, and the only phone available is an old coin phone in the lodge - but this was not a problem for us.

  • Disliked — Inconvenient phone service
