“Heaven on earth”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013 via mobile

We decided to treat ourselves with a weekend away for our anniversary. After doing a bit of research we decided to book Merribrook because from the pictures and other reviews we thought it was more the style of break we were looking for. Price wise is probably a bit more expensive than other accommodation in the area but totally worth the extra!!!

We couldn't have made a better choice. It is an idyllic hidden treasure within the region. The gardens are kept beautifully and walking around the property it is just a pleasure for all senses. The gorgeous smell of flowers, the picturesque views, the kangaroos, the rabbits hopping, the gorgeous room decor.... Everything is perfect. The lack of mobile reception is perfect for getting away from it all.

Although the place is perfect for a couple retreat, we had the kids with us and after a couple of hours there we had "thank you for taking us here" about three time. Not very like them at all.

The kitchen is extremely well equipped if you decide to cook your meals. The lounge area with the fire place is beautiful and cosy. The breakfast is 5 star with freshly made muffins, cakes and pancakes as well as a traditional cooked breakfast. Delicious!

We will definitely go back to Merribrook and feel very lucky to have experienced the Merribrook retreat. Thank you.

My wife and I went awy for a long weekend without the kids. Nice quaint cottages with a very nice bath for two. The Lodge has a large open fir place wich was fantastic for sitting by and drinking and eating the plunders that you collected throughout the day.

The only critisism I would have is that the full wall window that over looks the wonderfull gardens and lake also overlooks the path leading to the lodge. It is not that romantic to lay and bed and overlook the view when you have fellow guests making their way to the lodge for breakfast.

Room Tip: No mobile coverage and No wifi in the cottages (they do have wifi in the lodge.

I'm from the City in Western Australia and i wanted a get away for a couple of days with my partner to unwind and relax. I can honestly say there was nothing but 5 star amenities and service all around, and in such close vicinity to Margaret river, it is easily accessible from Perth and perfectly positioned for activities.

Having read the description ahead of time, i accepted that we were able to utilize the kitchen ourselves for dinner, and although we arrived quiet late in the evening, we came prepared with our own food. A quick crash course in commercial cooking equipment later, and we were eating our own cooked meal by the crackling fire place of the lodge in complete solitude. Even though we checked in well past the reception closing hours, we were still greeted by the lodge person in a casual and friendly manner to make sure we were all okay.

I am without doubt that you will not find anywhere in the world with this type of setting, scenery and quality, where you can enjoy an entire lodge to yourself to cook and dine and sit by the fire place with your own cooked meal, weather on a honey moon or on a family get away.

The hosts (I forget the two ladies names) which greeted us each morning were both so bright and delightful, and the selections for breakfast (gourmet buffet and also cooked breakfast) were more than was required.

The grounds were so well kept and i commend the grounds staff for the way they up kept the huge property, hand picked flowers, well kept and cleaned rooms, and the cleaners did an amazing job, everything was so unobtrusive, you barely knew there were other people there working in the back ground to make the place what it is. Granted we had some light conversation with other guests in the lodge at breakfast, exchanging the activities of the day, and i found that refreshing and a very welcoming atmosphere, however it was also very tranquil, and you could very easily be in peace if you so desired.

If you are looking for a place where you will be constantly waited on hand and foot, with on site restaurant for dinner, cable TV and constant phone calls from your work, this is not the place, this is a retreat and the perfect place to unplug. I found absolutely no desire to tap away on the internet which is a huge change for me, and when i really needed to, internet access was not an issue. There is little phone or internet reception, and that was perfect, because it allowed us to switch off from the buzz of work, and i had no problems cooking our own meals, and if you really want to be waited on, your so close to so many 5 star restaurants in the area that you could throw a rock and hit one, so i actually find it a great feature that you can opt to simply cook your own in the lodge.

There is a phone, and also wifi in the lodge, and you can get phone reception if you really want. If you want a place where you are constantly connected to all the modern services 24/7, you might be disappointed, however the same goes for the entire margaret river region given that the area is rural in nature, and as noted, when i really wanted to check in, it was not at all a hassle.

So if you are looking for the ultimate get away, and excuse to escape contact from work for a couple of days to relax, you will not be disappointed. And did i mention, over breakfast, we saw blue wren, ducks (and a duck egg by the lake) kangaroos, many kookaburra photos, rainbow lorakeet (i think), i honestly couldn't fault it, just take care driving in, it will quickly become apparent that you are living on a nature reserve.

Room Tip: We chose the Lake Side Villa and it did not disappoint, it had AC and a double person tub, and yes i...

The hosts Lorraine & Richard were so friendly and accommodating. The lake view room was well appointed. The lodge had an open fire at all times and was so inviting. We ate our evening meal there one night & played a game (supplied) by the open fire with a lovely bottle of red from Cape Grace. The breakfast is huge! So glad we made the most of the lovely property with a good walk before breakfast. I can't say enough about this place. Just go there!

...As soon as we started driving into this magnificent property we felt a great deal of good energy...and the minute we met Lorraine, we knew we were in for an unforgettable ride. The whole family was amazing! They were so accommodating, make us feel welcome and at home. Our walks in the morning to the Lodge, to have a fresh and yummy breakfast, was the best thing to start our day! We spent our evenings sitting in front of a great fire place either having a cup of tea or a glass of wine. Absolutely divine! Congratulations to the entire family for all the love and hard labor that I'm sure it went into creating this little piece of heaven on earth :)
It was hard for us to leave but we definitely hope to be able to come back. Thank you !

Room Tip: We stayed at the Forest Edge Villa very secluded. We love the sound of the running creek, the birds...

It's hard to believe that one family could create such an amazing paradise over a 30 year period...every time we drove in and out, the enormity of it amazed us. Thousands of trees planted, roads and pathways, exotic flora and picturesque villas...a mammoth task surely. Mix this beauty with the beautiful souls of the hosts and you're in for an unforgettable experience. We were lucky enough that 3 of Richard and Lorraine's children were home on Uni break which made our time even more enjoyable. As most other comments posted have said, breakfast is a true delight but the piece de resistance for us was without a doubt the family dog...a beautiful Great Dane by the name of V...her company made the trip! Should you be lucky enough to get the opportunity, invest a little extra and book the Lake House...we were so glad we did...if peace and tranquility are what you're after, then this is most definitely it! And a word of advice...however long you're planning on staying, book an extra night...you'll get to the end and want to stay an extra night but they'll be booked out, so don't be disappointed like ourselves and so many other reviewers have been...book the extra night upfront :-)
