It's not really a hotel inasmuch as a support system for dangdut and extremely sleazy disco.
The hotel is an hour by road from Kelantan, a more conservative town than Sungai Golok. The hotel is something of an instution -- or anti-institution in one sense-- no doubt the by product of cross-border sexual repression.
Genting has a flair for the most repellent entertainment, such that it defies imagination. It's is like Dali-raped-by-Spinal-Tap-but-in-Thailand. Even that misses the nuance of it. The hotel boasts perhaps the worst bar-disco-whatever I have ever been to -- there's been a lot of competition, but I am pretty sure about this. It is so tacky, so horrid, so cheap, so deplorable, so absurd, so Asian-hetero-camp, so sleazy, so degenerate, that it actually has a certain honesty about it. I actually enjoyed the show!
The entire hotel is pock-marked by cigarette burns, it's as if they have hosted back-to-back tobacco conventions and forgot to clean up afterwards. I have no idea what the lumps were in my pillow. And I washed anything that was wrapped in plastic with the reassuring "santized for your convenience" stamped on it.
On the plus-side the nearby street food is amazingly good, probably the most variety in Patani.
Should you stay at Genting? It depends on what you're after I guess.
