“OASIS OF WESTERN STYLE COMFORT”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2014

I am an experienced world traveler of mature years, picky, but not overly so, who does a lot of reaserch before i travel, so am generally happy with my hotel choices.
This place is an oasis of a Holiday Inn style hostelry in the sort-of wilds, so, not atmospheric but a nice haven. as stated in other reviews, it is a 70's extravaganza, and fun for that. very clean and comfortable. Just fine, no complaints. Ignore the cranky reviewers here. It isn't a memorable stay, but welcomingly hassle-free. No barking dogs or wailing mullahs. They had loud music playing around the entrance/lobby so as to appear sophisticated, but they turned it off when i told them to turn it down. You might want a room far from the reception area though, which is easy to do as the place is very spread out. Service friendly. For Goba (after all) it is a surprise and a god-send.

Room Tip: far from entrance.

Another 70s throwback, the dining room should be preserved for its spectacular design value. Rooms are spartan and compact but clean, and beds are comfortable. Be sure to turn on the boiler in your bathroom. Food was nice enough but tended to be westernised dishes, if you want anything local you need to ask for it, it is available. Breakfast was generous and the service pleasant. This is a comfortable and clean inexpensive hotel. A luxury lodge is being built on the other side of the plateau. The Wabe Shebelle will need investment to retain its custom but with a little upgrading would remain a good modest hotel option, currently It's a little tired, but I still recommend it.

This must be the nicest hotel in the Goba area, at the base of the Bale Mt National Park. The entrance is beautiful but things do downhill a bit from there. Front desk service was poor, often we simply walked behind the counter to pick up our key (note - anyone else could have done the same). When we dropped off our laundry we had that sinking feeling we'd never see it again, but the next day we did - piled up with everyone else's. Then they charged us double the posted rate because our clothes were so dusty - but even then it was so cheap it did not matter. Meals were pretty good, though the choices were limited and there was a loud TV just outside the door. The room and beds were small, it took a few tries before we (and the staff) managed to get the hot water heater working, but once it did we had adequate hot water so that was a treat. They did have WiFi, but only in the lobby and even then it was limited. best bet is to try to use it during off hours - one day we had an early start and I found it worked well at 5AM. But at supper-time, with everyone on their phones and computers, often it was not even accessible. It does look like they are trying to make the place better, but they need to upgrade the service level as well as the rooms.

This hotel is very large but there was no welcome from the staff, no porters, and surly reception staff - not a good start to our stay!
Our room was even worse,- it was small, felt damp, furniture was dusty and bedlinen not very clean. There was no electricity until 7.45pm, half-way through dinner and hot water was not constant - as compared with it being so in most of the other hotels we used during a 28-day tour.
The quality of food for the evening meal was its saving grace - although we had to wait a long time, it was hot and only cost 90Birr + taxes for 3 courses (one of the cheapest we had).
However, breakfast the next morning was a shambles and not good quality. We noted that several others of their numerous guests had also left their meals.
All in all, not worth staying at and we cancelled our planned second-night stay here.

Room Tip: Our room was on the ground floor and all those nearby looked just as bad as ours.

I stayed here for two nights early in December as part of a tour which saw me in 10 different hotels and lodges. I had stayed here previously two years ago.
I noticed a distinct overall improvement compared to 2011. My room was fine, the food was of a good standard and was served hot (unusual in my experience elsewhere in Ethiopia), the plumbing worked (also unusual), there was good Wi-Fi and even Premier League football on television!

The entrance to the hotel is impressive but the bedrooms are looking tired and in need of some renovation. The bedroom was adequate for our one night stay and because of the location, very quiet. As usual, there was no hot water (but we only had it twice in our 16 day trip).

The restaurant had a very limited menu (two lots of veal and fasting food) and the service was painfully slow. As we had eaten at lunchtime and did not fancy the offerings, we opted just for the soup which was tasteless.

Our room cost 556 birr (approximately $29) and included breakfast. With some prompting and encouragement we managed to secure breakfast at 5.30am (included in the price of the room) which meant we could have an early start. We had a good wi-fi connection in the morning, but it was slow and intermittent in the evening (but at least they had it, not many places did on our trip).

It was worth staying here as we saw an Abyssinian Wolf (just one) on our early morning drive to Negele).

We stayed here 2 nights. We paid for an upgraded room - I am not sure if it was worth the money but I saw the beds in the standard rooms and the mattresses were caving in the middle i.e no springs what-so-ever. We had a king size bed of which my mattress was OK and my husband's seemed to have springs poking out. The room and bathroom were fairly, or average, clean. I don't think our room got used much as it could have used a good dusting and vacuum. We did have hot water if we were both quick with our showers but the water pressure was weak. The wifi was slow and worked only part of the time - but that seemed to a common problem around town so we think it was the telecommunications system not the hotel. The food was edible - not great but not bad. We ate both dinner and breakfast there. The dinner menu was small - usually on 2 or 3 choices. The breakfast menu was slightly larger.
