“Not what it used to be”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2013

We have eaten at Ernest and Fidel many many times. Today was pretty much the last straw. First we asked for a wine list. No Prosecco was on the list, though we have had many bottles of Prosecco in the past. We asked the waitress and she said of course they had Prosecco. We ordered a bottle. She came back and said that "all of our bottles of Prosecco are open. We don't have any bottles too sell." Really? Several bottles are open? Why would you open more than one bottle at a time? Then we asked for a bottle of the Provencal rose--the $19 bottle, not the $40 bottle. The waitress brought a bottle. We asked, are you sure this is the one we ordered. "Well, yes, I think so, unless it isn't. Let me check." Oh, sorry, we don't have the $19 bottle. "Well, the problem is, he's changed the wine list so much.....". Finally we just ordered a glass of Pinot Grigio. Jees.....Then the lunch. In the past we've ordered the eggs benedict on an arepa instead of a bagle(really? on a bagle?). We've had that before (my husand is gluten alergic, so this was a plus). They said okay, but it was truly mediocre (not like the first time when it was absolutely delicious). All in all, a C minus at best. Too bad, we've really loved this place in the past.

“Ernest & Fidels Cafe”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

This is a quiet Reataurant located on simson bay lagoon in a new complex called Porto Cupecoy. It is off the beaten path as far as being close to resorts and timeshres/hotels. Located in Cupecoy this restaurant serves cuban style food. We enjoyed breakfast there last April 920120 on the front patio while looking at simpson bay lagooon and boating traffic. It is a quiet setting and the food was excellent. I highly recommend you try it out if you have arental car to travel the island and want to be where there is no hustle and bustle, but good service-cuban coffe-cuban inspired food.... % Stars IMHO....we will be back there 4/19/2013 for breakfast..

“Great Breakfast.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

We were attracted by the bright clean table cloths.... unlike most of the other restarants that had bare tables. The printed Menu was very colurful and nicely presented.... it made you want to eat.
The cuppuccino was served in an Irish coffe glass which was a bit weird and invloved a lot of careful mixing, whats wrong with a regular large cup ?
The food was good, eggs benedict, and smoked salmon and scrambled eggs both on an everything bagel. The service was fine as long as you read the menu that says "cooked fresh to order" so you should not be in a rush. The only thing that let the place down was the chap behind the bar, dressed in a vest.. which any man of a certain age should NOT wear in public ( or especially when serving food or drinks) and his track suit bottoms had clearly been used for painting and decorating his home from the looks of them, very shabby/ unclean looking. All in all a good breakfast and we will retun hoping the guy behind the bar smartens up his look for the overall feel of the place.

Dear Guest, thank you very much for your review . We're glad you enjoyed our food, drinks and service.
We take the time to ensure that our food comes out right and that is why we let the guests know about it. We only use fresh ingredients which makes the process a bit longer than usual but most guests appreciate the freshness.

I am the "chap" who was in a tank top. Unfortunatelly I got a call from my staff as I was doing my morning run, to come to help them with the glass-washer machine that had broken and was leaking water big time.
It was unfortunate the whole situation because not only we had this but at the same time the Cafe got really busy and I had to step in to help them with the washing of glassware and others. However, never involved with direct service.

I am sorry you had to witness my dresscode of that morning but it was an emergency.

And as per the cappuccino being served in a Irish coffee glass well, nothing in particular other than to show our guest what he/she is having. Most guests find it fancy and brings a wooow . . and a smile when they see it. so everybody is happy!

I take your review in the most positive way, as constructive criticism.
It will never ever happen again.
Have a wonderful day.

“Hidden gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2013

We spend about 10 days in St. Maarten every November and always come here for lunch at least once. It's a very relaxing little cafe in a courtyard at a high end condo community, and the food is always excellent for a late brunch or lunch. I think they use very fresh ingredients and the menu is creative.
