“Cheque Mate!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2011

Making the annual trip to visit family in the midlands over Christmas, The Chequers Country Inn made the experience a delightful little winter getaway.
Staff was extremely welcoming, food was quick and cooked to perfection.
Loved the traditional English interior, comfortable seating areas, and an all round warm, relaxed environment.
Served a well priced pint with seasonal ales.
The bedroom was a good size, comfortable bed and clean. Bathroom spotless!
Will be staying here when ever visiting the area without hesitation.

Stayed at the Chequers on 10/12/11 when visiting some family back up in Leicestershire with my girlfriend. I was very impressed with the place, on arrival we were greeted by the polite and friendly bar staff and checked into our room. The landlords promptly introduced themselves, they were very friendly and seemed to be very hands on with every part of our stay.

The room was a good size and immaculate, perfect for our weekend break.

We dined in the restaurant on the Saturday night with my Mum and Dad and we were all very impressed with the food and service. I opted for the fish and chips, my mum went for the lasagne, my dad had steak and my girlfriend had the ostrich special. The portions were plentiful and the food was great quality. The landlords came over towards the end of the meal to check everything was ok, very impressed with their hands on approach.

Will definitely be staying there when I pop up to visit the folks over the Christmas holidays again. Clean, friendly, welcoming and great value.

Thanks.

Room Tip: Stayed in Room 5, absolutely brilliant.

The new management team are fantastic! The place has a wonderful country pub ambiance. You feel welcome from the moment you walk through the door. There is ample parking so if you are staying the night, as we were, you don't have to worry or pay extra to leave the car overnight. The bar staff are incredibly helpful and friendly, it was busy when we ordered a drink but it didn't take them long to serve us - and they had smiles on the faces which I always find makes a huge difference.

We decided to eat before retiring to the room and I have to say the menu was a pleasant surprise. They have managed to stick with "good pub grub" (fish and chips) while also adding in some real luxuries with meals including ostrich, mussels and scallops! The prices are more than fair you can eat a Main from around £7-£15 - excellent for the quality! I went for one of the veggie options and it was great!

Our room was clean, comfortable and contemporary. The decoration had obviously had a lot of thought put into it. The bathroom was spotless and a very good size. We had a great nights sleep and thoroughly recommend the place.

Was up in the Leicester area and needed somewhere to stay. The hospitality was outstanding with fine service throughout the weekend. Food was fresh and perfectly cooked, with a great selection to choose from. Drink service was quick and the new management were welcoming, taking the time out to chat to the customers when possible. Will definitely visit there again, if only for the homemade burgers.

Room Tip: All rooms have their charms. Very clean and amenities were ample for my short weekend stay.

This is clearly under different management to when the negative reviews were written. I can't compliment the staff there highly enough. It was clean warm and comfortable, with a fantastic power shower in our room. We only ate there one night as we had made plans to meet friends, but it was the nicest meal of our stay and when we're back next year we will be eating all our meals there. Breakfast was also lovely, and we were definitely made to feel that nothing was too much trouble.
having previously stayed in other hotels in the area and been less than impressed, we will be returning to this one again, and we'll look forward to it.

Room Tip: You can request rooms away from the road, but to be honest it's such a quiet little village it m...

Lovely former coaching inn with interesting quirky features i.e. the Marylin Munroe room that my friend stayed in; he also enjoyed his stay, but is computer illiterate!

Made to feel exceptionally welcome by owner-hands-on-manager. He explained that he had just taken over in the last 3 months & that Chequers had 3 previous owners in the previous 2 years, hence older erratic reviews. He has renovated many of the rooms including a fabulously cute little bath in my bathroom.

Local blues band were playing and the owner kicked everybody out at closing time because of us paying guests! I suspect the entertainment could have gone on till later otherwise. Had a very good sleep in comfortable bed.

Good selection of reasonably priced wines & ales. Restaurant is good value but service a little slow. Its not the Fat Duck, more Garfunkles.

Everyone in the place was very friendly, twas a nice atmosphere.

Its in a very handy location for Motorways & beautiful unspoilt countryside, obviously not together!

We stayed 3/12, when went to bar to register, and was made welcome immediately. Filled out form with address etc, and time requiring breakfast. This was first time I was in control of what time I could have breakfast, and would encourage other establishments to take it on.
Room was clean, as was shower room. Clean sheets, towels, etc.
Breakfast consisted of orange juice, cereals and what ever you wanted. I had full English, while partner had scrambled egg. on toast. Food was freshly cooked, and piping hot.
I would deffinitely stay here again
