“An absolute JEWEL, with great food & service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2009

Just returned from this hidden jewel yesterday, & will never forget how pleased we were with everything! Over 20 years of staying in the Caribbean on a mid-income budget, this is the FIRST resort we have ever considered revisiting. There are always a couple issues to settle when you arrive at any value resort in the Tropics. As long as you politely identify the problem (& our Spanish is pathetic!), the staff at Don Juan go OUT OF THEIR WAY to please you. From Angel at the front office, to Melvyn in the buffet, and to ALL the fine cleaning & security employees, we recommend your personal attention.
Find a tour package that flies to Santo Domingo & you'll be in on site within 15 minutes! Unluckier vacationers bus there from La Romana in 1.5 hrs, from Punta Cana in 3.5 hrs. It's still worth the ride, & you'll see many shots of Caribbean reality along the way. Check-in is calm & speedy at the colourful lobby. Accept help from a bellman to find your room upon arrival, as there will be lots more to discover with the concise resort map they provide. The beautiful gardens & relaxing atmosphere will immediately set you into vacation gear!
It's easy to make your holiday as quiet or active as you wish. They have all the usual facilities, including a free daily shuttle into Santo Domingo, & the main street of Boca Chica just a block away. If you prefer more privacy from the public beach, take a lounger closer to the palms, just above the lamp-posts. The hotel's security is RELIABLE. .

I am traveleling three times a years and most of the time in 3 1/2 star so i am not e fancy traveller but that is the worst place i have ever been! Of couse that at the beach the salesperson are annoying but i could tolerate that, that is there job, but the hotel is soo boring and the restaurant is like a cafeteria with a lot of light!!! This is not a real private hotel with a nice site at all! The disco is boring! But it is just old man with young prostitute.. I' ll recommande Puerto Plata and Cabarete a lot more!!!!!!! If you wanna have fun and party, don t go there it is a old peaple place!

First off i read the last review and couldnt believe my eyes. So that you know whos giving the review im 25 and went with my husband to celebrate our 5 year wedding aniversary. I booked with sunwing. Let me explain im pretty picky person but i dont like over the top fancy. the only crappy part about going to this hotel is that after the 5 hour airplane ride you go on a 4 hour bus ride to the hotel we arrived there at 6 am from toronto. the food is great theres no way u can be hungry breakfest lunch and dinner all buffets and if for a small chance u miss one of the 3 there 2 snack bars one is a pizzeria and the other serves bar b q hot dogs hamburgers chicken ribs fries. the first room we go had an awful view and the ac was shaky so i asked they move us rooms.
so they moved us to 8103 its not a beach view buts it was a big room . yes the beach is not public and full of vendors and its gets annoying with the kids begging but i found that if you were dark shades u can pretend ur sleeping and they walk away. the hotel is beautiful the beach is awesome the staff extremely friendly and the animation staff was entertaining as hell . they put on a show every night there awesome .we also went on 2 of the excursion the safari and the sauna. the safari is for the humble and that like to expierence the world u see the poorest of the poor and u get to go through there homes and see how they live and mend for themselves it was a life changing expierence. and the sauna was more like party/drunk central full of turist swimming getting drunk (not my scene) the entertainment was awesome at the hotel theres angelo ramon raphael luis suhelen lulu and theres more but i dont rember everyones name there absoloutely awesome. i would not recomend leaving far from the hotel they no ur a tourist and try to sell u something or worse. there was no hookers to my knowledge but u see many men from the states and europeens with youger girls and swinger cuples but i mean are u there to watch them NO so enjoy your vacation i did and i cryed when i left were going back again next year a vacation is what u make of it so have fun .. ney the sunwing rep pretty helpfull luis the entertainment staff very fun to look at ..and u have awesome excurtion guides like leonardo (safari) or alejandro a beach vendor that will tell u the funniest stories .. have fun and enjoy ...

  • Liked — the beach the sun and the animation staff..
  • Disliked — the vendors on the beach, the 4hour bus ride there ..

We got back on Feb 28th from a week's stay and for the money, this was a terrific place to go. There was five of us, all in our 40's. We upgraded to Captain's Club rooms, which I highly recommend, they were roomy and very clean, and I loved the extras, jacuzzi, walk-in closet, etc, and it still cost us under $950 CDN, taxes in!

This is not a party place, which we really, really appreciated, and not too many children either. If you want to relax, take in some sun, eat good food, swim in beautiful, calm water, and not pay a fortune - this is the place to go.

The staff was fantastic! When I asked for extra pillows at the front desk, they were there almost before I got back to the room! The maid was so accomodating and sweet - she helped me find some lost documents and even though she didn't speak English, we made ourselves understood. As long as you have a smile on your face, you'll find that Dominicans are some of the friendliest people out there.

The beach is AWESOME! I couldn't get enough of it. There's a natural reef surrounding the bay and the water is very calm and warm. Yes, the vendors can be pushy, but only if you encourage them. Once one stops to talk, they all swarm around. We made friends with Isabel, who does manicures/pedicures and massages, and Alexander, my personal jeweler. They were very, very friendly as long as you have a smile on your face. Remember, they are very poor people and we look very rich in their eyes - there's bound to be some resentment.

The food was fine - not haute cuisine, but very tasty and lots of it. Breakfast is terrific at the buffet - really good omelet bar. The pizza and bar-b-qued chicken (my favourite) are ready all afternoon, and dinner at the buffet is surprisingly good. The a la carte is very good, and there was no limit as to how many times we could go! Then, there's chicken, burgers, hot dogs, pork chops, salad all evening at the bar-b-que. We pigged out!

The pools are really small, but we didn't go there for the pools. But the activities were so much fun - water polo will never be the same! We really enjoyed the 'Drink of the Day' - the Wo Wo is very good, and so was the Mai Tai and the Passion Fruit Dacquiri.

The guests at the resort are mostly German, French and Canadian - we had such fun with two German chaps in the pool playing water volleyball (with no rules).

A couple of tips:
- DO NOT book a trip here with a flight landing in Punta Cana - be forewarned, the travelling time will be over 4 hours by bus. We flew to La Romana and it was 1.5 hours by bus, which was just fine. Some flights land in Santo Domingo, which is even closer. Check your flights carefully.
- Don't go into the town, Boca Chica, alone, stay in a group or at least in couples. We didn't hear anything about any violence against tourists, but we heard lots of stories about tourists being over-charged for beers ($50 US for two), and my brother was physically accosted by a prostitute while going to a cigar store on the main strip. There's strength in numbers, so keep together. Try not to go to town after dark at all, and don't go too far on the beach after dark (the guys in our group were offered cocaine).
- Do not expect North American standards - the shower may not be hot, etc, this is a very poor country and if you see where they live you'll see that a lot of them don't have running water at all.

All in all, I'd go back - no problem! I wish I was still there.

Just came back from the Don Juan resort on March 1st. Went with my boyfriend and my mom. Age ranges 27-48, we all had a good time. My boyfriend and I usually travel together and we are not picky at all, actually all the resorts we stayed at were 3 and a half stars. The Don Juan was rated 3 and a half by itravel2000.com and silver sun by Sunwing which really translates to 4 stars. In the previous resorts we visited, both the traveling company and the website we booked with were very right in terms of their rating, this resort not so much. We personally would rate it as 2 or 2 and a half stars only because:
-most staff do not speak English at all
-one person at the customer service desk at all times
-no entertainment after 11pm, after the nightly show which was very good there is a disco at the resort but no one really goes there so you are left with no entertainment. If you like to party and not sleep at 11pm, this resort is not for you
-not much entertainment during the day, barely see the animators. Music played during the day is very old fashion.
-the buildings are old and somewhat run down (we didn't go there for the beauty of the buildings so it didn't matter to us)

like some of the other reviews say it is a public beach, however most of the locals hang out on both sides of the resort but not right on it as there are little restaurants and other hotels on both sides of the Don Juan resort. They are very friendly and don't bother the tourists. Security at the beach is very good at monitoring and making sure that beggars don't bother the tourists. A lot of vendors pass by offering their services, but they are friendly and if you are not interested just say 'no thank you' or 'no gracias'. The beach is clean except for when you step to the sides where it's completely public.
Be a smart tourist. Don't carry large amounts of money and don't wear all your bling at once. Be nice and respect local rules.

Good things about this resort:
-beach, beach, beach-is just gorgeous
-food is very good, even if you are a picky eater you will always find something you like
-when you do see the animators they are very friendly
-don't be scared to wonder into Boca Chica but go in a group especially at night
-room was quite large and clean

Overall it's a nice resort, if you spend most of your time at the beach, you'll love it but if you spend most of your time in the room, you should probably reconsider.

My husband and 2 other couples stayed here and we had a blast, the rooms were very clean, the food was great, service was great, and the beach beautiful. The buffet 3 times a day had tons of food to choose from plus their is always snack bars and pizza every day. the drinks were plentiful and never did we have to wait for drinks. Overall we had a great time and will go again. I would recommend to get to know some of the locals and they can help you out on getting deals on things. ask for junior or romano on the strip, they speak english and are very honest

Booked through Sunwing, 4 hours drive from the Airport. Once we got there, the room was dirty and mouldy. Drawers were missing! The reception staff were very unfriendly and told us that there were no other rooms available.
Once we talked to the manager, we were given a choice between other rooms that were a bit better.
The beach is public, so you can't relax without someone trying to sell you something or give you a manicure/ pedicure....kids begging, etc...
some of the staff was okay but most lack some training on how to serve customer......Honestly, it was the first and will be the last time I will go the Dominican Republic....oh yah...don't make phone calls using a pay phone....a 2 minutes call to Canada cost me over $50!!!.... just find another place to go.....all the best.
