“Expensive but worth it”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2012

After reading the reviews on T.A and thinking "oh no... i hope not"!! I have decided to share my experience of Horwood House.

We ( Me & Mrs ) stayed here on Sat March 30th for a wedding reception Venue ( as we live along way i decided to grab a room and drink too my hearts content )

OK...First Impressions??? - Amazing.....as you turn off the road and drive down the private road the views etc are stunning and the place looks amazing .....you really do get a WOW on arrival !!!

★★Check in★★ We had speedy check-in as there were two weddings on the day, all i had to do was sign and grab my key , maybe different for others not attending a function but all was good , staff seemed nice and friendly/polite etc.

★★Finding The Room★★ Yes it is a bit mad to get a map ...but .....I thought it was easy (actually i followed the Mrs) but there are signs everywhere and people have to be a bit dim or too lazy to read to get completely lost (drunk i can totally understand lol)

★★Room★★Not a good start...BUT....electronic key would not work and i didnt fancy the 5min treck back to reception , a cleaner was just walking past and she let us in , 2mins later a man appeared and gave us a second key , so all good on that score!!!

Room itself? - Lovely ( IT DOES HOWEVER APPEAR TO BE A LOTTERY ) as some of our friends described theirs as "a box" ...other reviews on here seem to support this.
Ours was perfect for a couple , safe , Iron , Trouser Press , Kettle etc etc
Shower wasn’t hot enough unfortunately ( lucky both of us showered before we left for the hotel , but if im honest i would have liked to freshen up ) but luckily not a big deal.

★★Food★★ We didn’t eat there as we went to the pub down the road "The shoulder of mutton" - paid £30 for a mixed grill & a steak , lovely pub , good service & food.
Had a finger buffet at night but i was too drunk to comment if im honest.

★★PRICES★★ ha ha ha !! CHEAP IT AINT! - First pint was £4.60 - A cider was £4.20..
They had pre-swiped my card at reception so you can be wallet less and sign for everything.
( Dangerous i know lol ) My bar bill was £90 , too be fair it was for 2 people and i was at a good mates wedding with alot of friends i hadn’t seen in almost a year , so i fancied a party!!

Total Bill for 1 night was £150 including drinks ( room was £70) ..Check out was a bit bonkers but not surprising really , I filled in the quick check out and legged it!
Lets just hope they

★★OVERALL ★★ I thought it was AMAZING ,Perfect for a wedding doo.......normal romantic night away????????? hmm not too sure??? Maybe if i felt flush lol.....

I gave ★★★★ as they do need to work on a few things , Bar service in function room went too pieces once everyone has arrived & its too expensive.
They also need to have the radiators on!!! Not on 1 , it’s a huge old building…IT GETS COLD !!

Its a great place to take the Mrs and you'll defo earn some browny points if you book this place.May however need a bank loan.

★ I left my Phone charger in the Room & they posted it back to me :) How cool is that :) ★

Room Tip: ★★TOP TIP★★ ask for room 415 & tip those room lottery scales

We have just returned from a weekend away at the Horwood Hotel, first impressions were very good, the drive up to the hotel is lovely and the hotel looks great. When we arrived the receptonist was very helpful, and told us how to get to our rooms, this is a task in itself, it is a maze of corridors and steps, when we did eventually find our rooms, we were a little disapointed the room size was okay, but the bed was only a double, a kingsize bed, would have made our stay much more comfortable. The rooms are very modern, not at all like the front of the hotel, but everything was clean and well kitted out, the only fault was there was no fan in the bathroom and the shower had no power at all and kept going off.
We went to use the swimming pool on the second evening, when we did eventually manage to find out how to get in there, the pool was very nice, the jacuzzi and the steam room were out of order and there were no towels, but we rang reception for some and they soon arrived.
Breakfast is a free for all, no problem with the food, but getting any is,this is down to lack of staff, they definately need more, especially when they have a wedding, murder mystery weekend and other guests all staying at once like they did during our stay.
On our first evening we used the village pub for our meal this was very nice, but the second night we opted to have our meal in the hotel restuarant, big mistake, the price is high and the portions very small, trying to split the bill and pay on two cards seemed beyond them, so ended up having to put on room bill.
I am not sure if I would stay here again, as being so far out there was no entertainment in the evening at the hotel, unless you wanted to join in with the weddings.

Stayed one night and it was one too many. The discount given by late rooms was disproportionate as it was over priced for a hotel that falls short of faded elegance. Nothing good to write as the room was small the bathroom tired and the longest walk to reception.

Room Tip: Book near reception unless you have your walking shoes

I stayed a weekend night there in March 2012 with my other half. Got a half decent deal for £60 without breakfast from laterooms which I thought was very reasonable. Place is in a lovcely country setting. Staff are super helpful and fast and efficient - no coimplaints there whatsoever. We did n't eat at the hotel so cannot review that aspect although the restaurant looked very swanky. The menu and drinks prices were very (unrealistically!) expensive though so we opted for the excellent country gastro pub along the road for evening meal - the Shoulder of Mutton - about 1 mile away and a great find and great food!!

My main gripe with the place is that the room we were allocated was absolutely tiny and barely room to swing a cat! We only had the one case but if we had had a second bag, we would have been falling over each other and the bags!! Had we had a decent sized room, the review would have been very good or excellent.

The place has a swimming pool and gym which again was fairly average. Male changing rooms are not in the pool complex and requires a short walk along the corridor. Stupid and uinworkable system of codes to punch iunto the pool area door and the male changing room door. No attendant. Reasonable pool - maybe 13 or 14m enough for a few strokes. Shallow end to end just over a metre. Kids not allowed in before 10am or after a certain time so look for that period. Jacuzzi was covered in black bin bags all taped together. Place has 2 saunas (one padlocked) and no steam room which was odd! Only one shower in the male changing room.

Other minor gripe was that quite a lot of the ornate streetlamps were not functioning in the gardens and parking which was a little awkward.

I would probably stay again but would certainly not pay top dollar for the place. Hope that helps someone else in making a decision. It is basically a country house hotel used primarilly for conferences and as a weekend wedding factory!!

We stayed at this hotel as guests at a wedding held there . The long drive up to the building was very grand with a red carpet leading into the reception.
The building is beautiful but a bit of a struggle to find your way around. We wandered along corridors going down sets of steps trying to find our room (no.139).In fact it seemed to be amusing to most people as we all passed each other smiling and saying we were lost.
However when we found it, we were pleasantly surprised. We were on the ground floor with a wonderful view of open fields and trees, along with a few sheep in the distance.
Although the room was small it was nicely decorated and immaculately clean. The bed was comfortable but seemed like a small double as there was not a lot of room compared to our own.
I'd recommend this hotel for a wedding because of the beautiful surroundings and the friendly helpful staff. The wedding service was pleasant and light hearted. The food was delicious, well presented and served by very attentive and efficient staff.
Only negative comment it that the bar prices are very pricey (£4.90 pint)

Meant to write a review late last year when I stayed, but it slipped my mind. Had read some not so good reviews and must say I was pleasantly surprised. This is is not a luxury spa hotel, but it is a great hotel in a lovely village, just a short drive away from Milton Keynes which has a real intersting feel. A real mixture of traditional and modern, as a frequent visitor to Milton Keynes I don't think there are any other hotels like this locally, this is a little gem. Great service from staff who you can tell enjoy their jobs.

Some areas need a slight refit, but bedrooms of a good standard and a lovely bar and restaurant with a very contemporary feel and a good atmosphere. Will definately stay when in Milton Keynes again,

Room Tip: Quality accomodation, not far from Milton Keynes. Much better than staying in your typical hotel in...

Firstly, we are very fussy!!!!! We don't look for faults but have found them in many a hotel etc......BUT.....we have to say that there was absolutely no faults at this hotel.

The walk to the room took no time at all and we had a high numbered room. The signs are easy to follow and really if you want a small hotel where you don't have to walk far, go stay in a bijou hotel!
The room we had was not huge but was an ample enough size and my partner is 6ft 4 and not small. It was decorated in a modern style, clean and fresh and the bed, very comfy. There was not a spec of dust or dirt.
We paid under 60 pounds for our one night stay, what a bargain!
For the price we stayed in a beautiful smart hotel with added benefit of the gorgeous surroundings. We heard no noise from the other rooms at all. We had a swim in the pool and a sauna.

We went to the Tempus bar to have a few drinks. Great interior design. Then on to the restaurant where again the decor was great.....this is where we become fussy as we are both pretty good cooks.
The only word to use is...FANTASTIC! The food was to die for. Best meal out in years!!!!!! from the bread to the free olives to the really good wine at only 13.00 pound for the bottle. The waiting on staff were terrific, attentive and very friendly. Same again in the morning at breakfast.
We loved our stay and had the most brilliant time.

Thank you to all the staff and hotel owners.....for 58 pounds we had a fantastic and relaxing stay with beautiful food etc etc etc.......!!!!
