“Clean and comfortable if a bit characterless.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2009

We stayed here one night on our (too short!) trip to Hampi. They offered a reasnoble rate for the quiet season. The staff were all polite and helpful. In particular the restaurant manager was a really nice bloke! The food was fine - standard south Indian fare with continental if wanted. Beer was quite cheap.
Our room was large and clean. The bed was big and comfortable, the AC worked well, plenty of towels provided and the bathroom was also fine, modern and clean. However, the room was characterless and could have been anywhere in the world.
The pool is a definate bonus to cool off in after a hot day at the Hampi ruins. A decent size and clean. As a base for exploring Hampi the Malligi Hotel is good but not a hotel you will remember in years to come! I stayed at another hotel in Hospet (Paydarshini?) 12 years ago and Malligi is much, much better than here!

I wasn't expecting much for the cheap rates. But the hotel was a complete surprise. Located not too far away from the hospet station, it's neat and clean. The rooms are spacious. But the beds, pillows and sheets aren't very comfortable. Food and wine is easily available and cheap. Room service is fast and good. Staff are friendly and helpful.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2009

We stayed at the Malligi for three nights as we were visiting Hampi, where we had the good fortune to experience the temple festival, eat lunch at the Mango Tree and see all those wonderful sights. Malligi would seem at the moment to be the only viable possibility for a stay in Hospet, and we found that the staff at the reception desk were not very communicative. However, there was a written welcome for us on the board when we arrived! Our room was enormous - remove the bed and you could have had a ball there! The "safe" was a cupboard with a crooked key that didn't lock, but the room and bathroom were fine and also clean (three men cleaned it every day). The curtains remained closed as the room (3rd floor) looked out onto an area which was used as a toilet by the locals (this land does not belong to the hotel). The hotel has a small shop for water and toiletries, a lovely Kashmiri shop with jewellery (run by a very friendly northern Indian gentleman) and a well-stocked but rather dusty bookshop. The "inside" restaurant where we had breakfast is ice-cold (on account of the a/c), the service was slow and we didn't always get what we had asked for (although it tasted fine!). In the evenings we ate in the open-air restaurant "Waves", where it was much warmer, but the service and the food much better. We had a long conversation one afternoon with the head waiter about many aspects of Indian life, very pleasant and interesting. Our friends went for a massage and were a little worried because the facilities seemed very basic, however they felt really good after a thorough treatment! The swimming pool was always full, but was quite attractive. However, they tend to shut the pool for maintenance at very short notice. There is also a small lawn for relaxation. Hospet is not a particularly attractive town, but there are some good (and again rather dusty) shops.
All in all the Malligi makes a rather gloomy impression, but it isn't as bad as it looks!

Hampi is one of the great sites in India - relatively unknown but absolutely superb. Accommodation in the area is abysmal and up to now Malligi was the best of a very poor lot.

We stayed in a (I rather think it was the) suite. All very eccentric and as other have mentioned chaotic. The whole place has an air of uncaring incompetence but with no other choice we had to stay in the hotel on two separate occasions.

Both times the food was dodgy and we suffered afterwards (the only time in eight weeks travelling in India in Jan and Feb 2009) and the restaurant is lamentable. A very strange place indeed. The liveliest moments came when the mangement set off extremely loud fireworks in the courtyard to frighten off the monkeys.

We understand a new hotel is being built (Taj Krishna?) which will allow visitors to avoid Malligi.

On the plus side the internet connection was okay and reasonably priced.

We would avoid Malligi in future.

My only problem with the Malligi was the inattentive staff at the front desk. I had a huge, comfortable room, and it was convenient to Hampi, if lacking in atmosphere. For groups it would be the only really reasonable choice, but it could be a lot better. I loved the pool in the morning - no one there, quite clean. I think it gets crowded in the afternoon.

This is probably the Only Hotel which is decent for both Stay and for Food in Hospet, which is the base for visiting Hampi. We booked direct and after confirmed rooms in the NEW WING. Cost was about 1800 INR. Please ask for the New Garden / Pool facing rooms as this is the renovated part. The Old wing looks like a beaten down downtown dormitory accomodation.

The room was neat, the airconditioning works, the bathroom was clean. We asked for an additional bed for our son, and they put that up on the floor till we protested and asked for a cot. Housing service was prompt, but you need to keep asking for supplies.

This has 2 restuarants and probably the only decent places in Hospet to eat. They have a bar but is is wise to stick to Beer or straight drinks. Give cocktails a miss.

Food service takes a huge time even for simple plain orders. So order in advance and relax till the food comes. Food can be cold when it comes ( delay is probably in the Service and not the kitchen ) so keep pushing the stewards. Menu has a wide choise ( North Indian, South Indian, Chinese, Continental ) : Stick to North Indian for meals and to South Indian / Continental for Breakfast. Chefs are mostly from Bengal & East India. Thay have Buffet only if the Hotel is full. Quality of food is decent and the cost is reasonable.

There is a small shop inside the Hotel that will sell films to short eats, water and toiletries. This ensures that you do not have to go to Hospet town for anything and this is really good.

Airconditioning in the restuarant is not effective.

Hampi is about 12 kilometers away. Eat at Mango Tree ( a good walk from behind the Virupaksha Temple Complex) as that is an experience by itself.

I will recomment this Hotel as the best base for Hampi. Guest Houses in Hampi are for Budget travellers and for High end you have the Boulders resort at Hampi.

One of "Us 2" was born in Hospet, India and to visit the Hometown and Historical sites was great. The restaurant food was good and varied nicely. The service, however, in the restaurant was not good. Because of the Holiday Season, we think they were a bit understaffed in the restaurant area particularly.
The hotel rooms were comfortable and suprisingly big and were almost-suite like with a separate sitting room and then bedroom/bathroom combination.
The hotel is in a secure location and doesn't afford any particular views except on the courtyard side, but we would recommend it for it being one of the only Hotels in Hospet which has all the comforts of home!!!
