“Intimate insight”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2014 via mobile

Tricky to locate (we saw one pink sign in Tias) and with little nearby parking, do not be put off. Wonderfully intimate insight into the man behind the books, his inspirations and his home life. The little cup of delicious coffee in the kitchen really brought the visit to life!

“So worth it!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2014

I am portuguese and i had a very bad idea of Saramago, but just for curiosity we wanted to see his house! When in Tias, we didn't know where the house was so we went to the local police station and a very nice policeman told us the way! The house and the museum are really worth the visit and the small entry charge! There is a very nice surprise in the middle of the tour, and the guide spoke with such passion about Saramago's life that it changed completely the way I felt about him, and triggered on us the desire to read more of his work! I really recommend the stop there!

“Moving”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2014

This felt like one of the most personal museum visits ever, and not only because of Saramago's wish to treat all visitors to a cup of Portuguese coffee on his balcony. The house doesn't have so many visitors yet, half of it is still inhabited by the family and it all feels like Saramago has just died or, better yet, that he's away on a book tour. My only criticism is the audio guide in English - the guide's Spanish accent is so strong that you often miss what's being said, but it's hard to go back because the takes are very long.

A nice and surprising treat , was on the road and hadn't planned on stopping here but delighted we did. The toddler even was amazed at the place.

“Visit Here and Come Away Inspired!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2014

Casa Jose Saramago is a wonderful place to visit - offering a very interesting glimpse into the life of this great writer. We were accompanied by a guide who was passionate about sharing information and answering our questions about Saramago (you are also given a handset to listen to in your own language). We knew little about the works of Saramago before we visited but came away with a definite interest in reading his books. We bought one of his books and a DVD - a brilliant documentary called 'Jose and Pilar' produced by Pedro Almodavar's company - that is little short of sensational. Can't recommend a visit here highly enough.
