We spent a wonderful and very relaxed week there. They offer a very good WiFi access which helped us to stay in contact with our family and friends in Germany. Our host assisted us with any information about Port Alfred and the neighbourhood. The house and the rooms are very clean and the breakfast is very special (nice fruit arrangements etc.)

Room Tip: Suite 1 and 2 have a sea view or a side view over the ocean.

We stayed at Villa De Mer for ten days and what an amazing experience it was! The staff were all very friendly, gave us fantastic service and made us feel completely at home! Excellent hospitality! The breakfasts were deliciously abundant and much care also went into the presentation. Our hosts were most helpful in assisting us with suggestions of places to visit and good restaurants in the area. Our room on the ground floor, leading directly onto the pool and garden, was very comfortable and spacious and the bathroom had a lovely shower. The house is conveniently situated across the road from the beach. Overall, this beautiful house was always kept clean and tidy and we were most impressed. Many thanks to all at Villa De Mer for having made our stay such a memorable one and we do hope to return one day!

We spent 9 lovely nights/days in this beautiful 4* b&b. We had a lovely clean room with a beautiful view of the sea. The staff were super friendly. Every morning for breakfast we were served fresh fruit, yoghurt as well as a cooked breakfast. Our host readily assisted us with anything we needed to know about Port Alfred, good restaurants, cruises on the river etc. This b&b short walk to a blue flag beach..

Room Tip: choose either room 1 or 2 - if you want a view of the sea

4 Star Guest House but no air con?
Very limited TV Channels.
Dirty Pool.
Upstairs Lounge TV Remote Did Not work.
One tiny bar of soap is given at the start of your stay which you must use in the shower and then take it out the shower when you need to wash your hands.
No milk was given on 2nd day of stay.
No cool drinks or beer are stocked as the guest house has no liquor license.
Breakfast consists of fruit and then the following:
2 eggs
2 rashes bacon
3 mushrooms

And then each morning they give 3 slices toast, not 4, but 3.

Much room for improvement.
But the fastest improvement would be if the manager did not have the approach that everything she does for you is a big favour to you when you are paying R1300 per night.
The manager really made us feel like we were an inconvenience instead of the reason the guest house is in business.

Too many negatives to mention.
We could not wait to leave.

The guest requested accommodation during our peak season. Since it was their honeymoon, we wrote him that as a gesture of goodwill and at no extra cost, we would upgrade the couple after the 3rd day to our Executive suite with private balcony for the remaining three days. On the day of their arrival, he phoned at around 11.30 and was very surprised that he cannot move into his room. We referred him to our standard letter we wrote him confirming that check-in time is from 2pm. He was however, welcome to use the lounges in the meantime and we would endeavour to get his room ready as quickly as possible. He declined the offer and replied that since they needed items, they would go shopping. Shortly after 1pm, he called again and asked whether we could provide transport from the shopping centre outside town. We drove to the shopping centre outside town and learnt that they arrived with a shuttle and had no vehicle. Whilst driving to the Guest House, the guest mentioned the name of Trip Advisor and how it could hurt an establishment. This comment was said in passing and totally out of content. At the time the thought crossed our mind that he is an old hand at writing to Trip Advisor.
Here are the facts.
1. For the guest’s information, we have been awarded 5 stars by both the Tourism Board and the AA provided that we install air conditioning and employ a butler to be on duty 24/7. We decided against this as we would have to raise the rates. All the rooms are equipped with ceiling fans. We must hasten to add that this summer was exceptionally hot and humid.
2. Most 4 star guest houses do not have a liquor license. There is however, a fridge in the room and water. In this case, the couple arrived unprepared and were not interested in walking to a shop that is 10minutes away. We supplied them with a 2lt orange juice.
3. On day 2, we once again transported them to town which is only a 5 min drive away. Upon their return they told us that whilst they are very happy staying at Villa, they have` found friends’ staying at another hotel in town and they would like to move. He emphasized the fact that they had a very pleasant stay at Villa. We realised that they walked over the hill instead of along the river and that transport is their main problem. The guest can consider himself very lucky that we allowed him to move without paying for the remaining period. This was our peak season and we had turned other people away. Many guest houses would not have been so lenient.
4. Since they had no vehicle, the couple spent a lot of time in the room. It was very difficult to have it serviced and since they were on honeymoon, we gave them enough privacy.
5. Regarding breakfast, we pride ourselves on serving A Villa breakfast. It is self-service and the menu changes every day. Our menu consists of a fruit platter, juice, cereal, yoghurt cocktail, muffins, coffee and a cooked breakfast e.g. pork sausages, bacon, tomato, 2eggs, mushrooms, toast – as many slices as they require.
6. Regarding the rates. The guest is welcome to check the peak season rate at other guest houses on the beach front. Peak season ends 15 January.
However, the true reason for the guest writing his review, is the following. They checked-out early on day 3 and left their bags in the reception area. We assumed that they had gone for a walk along the beach. The 4 staff members called the manager to the room to check on the condition of the bedding. Our new Egyptian bedding was stained with red/orange marks. This included the mattress – also a brand new bed, the mattress protector, 2 sheets, duvet cover and one pillow slip. Since we did not recognise the type of stain, we decided to take the bedding to the Laundromat. We had to drop the night staff in town and since we were very anxious about the type of stain, we took the laundry along. Upon their return, we told them that we had taken the bedding to the Laundromat and that they would have to foot the bill of R65. The guest pointed at his leg that had a small plaster and, claimed that it could not have been so bad. He stated that Guest Houses like to enlarge the problem in order to get more money out of guests. His wife then intervened and showed us a new orange facecloth that she used to remove the stains. That explained the strange coloured that was absorbed from the new facecloth. We suggested that we would call the Laundromat, who were puzzled by the stain, and to explain the kind of stain. We would also ask them to hold the bedding in order to enable the guests to check the bedding to verify our claim. Whilst we were busy checking another guest out, the couple picked up their bags and walked to the hotel in town.

At the end of the day, we regret that this couple did not approach us when we could have rectified matters. It was after all their honeymoon and memories they would have liked to have treasured. This is a remark he wrote in one of his emails – “Thanks again for the great service and kind gestures!”

This B&B is more like a hotel that is so friendly. The owner and staff were very kind and helpful, turning around our washing n record time (as we suddenly realised we'd run out of clothes the afternoon before checkout- we really appreciated it!)

The breakfast were lovely, rooms were clean and standards of décor was high. We stayed in the room next to the communal pool but never had issues with noise or privacy- we'd actually recommend this room.

We were staying with another couples (separate rooms) and the staff were really great about us having late night drinks on the balcony.

Would recommend Port Alfred - this is not a stop over town! Wish we had another day there!

We stayed one night in Port Alfred between Safaris. We enjoyed our night at Villa de Mer. Our Suite did not leave any wishes open, the bath is very big, new and exclusive. Our host was very friendly and helped us with all we needed and good Restaurant recommendation too. The breakfast was plentiful and because we could not eat all (we had a large meal with dessert the evening before) she gave us freshly baked Muffins for on the road. The weather was a bit cold so we could not enjoy the pool or the beach but the beach Looks fantastic and is just a few steps away.

Room Tip: The Suite with view of the ocean is very nice

We chose Villa de Mer as a beach holiday for 2 nights to relax after flight(s) from UK. This certainly met our expectations with a wonderful position across from beach and 10 minutes walking distance along the beach to a restaurant overlooking the estuary. The Guest House was of an excellent standard, very friendly, very clean, modern and comfortable. Our bedroom and bathroom (which was enormous) were superb with lovely views. The breakfasts were good and the owner Memory was very helpful with activity suggestions. I found the Settlers monument on the hill above Bathurst and also (surprisingly) the Big Pineapple on the way to Bathurst to be quite interesting.
