“Fabulous hotel on the Dead Sea”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2010

If you want to experience the Dead Sea, and partake of spa treatments, this hotel is superb. Absolutely clean and comfortable, and beautifully designed as well. Very well-trained staff is very helpful. After a hot, sweaty day of touring, we were greeted with a cool wet towel and juice. Ahhhhhh! Pampering! Our room was extremely quiet and comfortable. The grounds are exquisite, and the spa was fabulous. This is one of the nicest hotels we have ever stayed in. You can bob around in the Dead Sea, or experience the salt water in the spa. The only nit-picky comment is that it takes nearly a day to figure your way around the resort. It is very large, and is situated on a hillside going down to the beach/sea. So, to get to the beach from the main building requires many steps and 2 elevators. Buffet breakfast was excellent, and there are several restaurants to choose from. I'd recommend this hotel for anyone. We stayed 2 nights to have a break from vigorous touring, and it was great. We appreciated the free access to computers in the Business Center, so that we could check our e-mail.

MDSUTTON, Manager at Kempinski Hotel Ishtar Dead Sea, responded to this review, November 8, 2010
Dear "Poisonprincess",

Good day and warm greetings from the Dead Sea. We are very pleased to receive your positive comments regarding your recent stay with us and to hear that you received some well deserved "pampering" after your vigorous touring schedule.

We are pleased to inform you that we are in process of addressing your comments regarding the initial challenge you encountered in finding your bearings and navigating around the vast hotel grounds. We are in the process of finalising a new signage project that will see an additional 60 detailed signs placed throughout the hotel that we know will assist our guests greatly.

"Poisonprincess" thank you again for your positive response and we hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back to the Kempinski Hotel Ishtar in the not too distant future.

Kind regards,

The Kempinski Team

We travelled in Jordan on a “Jules Verne” package and came to the Kempinski Dead Sea after staying at the Kempinski at Aqaba. The Dead Sea hotel is meant to be 5 stars plus and having found their sister hotel in Aqaba absolutely excellent we were looking forward to the Dead Sea. But we were disappointed. Not bad, just not as good as it should have been. You need to know that the site is huge. Seven acres apparently. We had a room – very comfortable and well designed - in the main hotel looking out over the sea - which is about half a mile away through the “chalet” type other rooms of which there are a lot. And there is the first problem - the hotel attempts to accommodate too many people. We arrived on a Saturday and being the weekend it was packed. Too many for the restaurants {there are four although one was being refurbished whilst we were there} all of which play ear-splitting loud non-tranquil music at all times. You may find this hard to believe {I find it hard to believe} but that first night we went to the next door hotel to eat and, at least, the restaurant was not full and it was acceptably peaceful. Quality of service? - with the honourable exception of Mohammed outside the Italian restaurant, the staff throughout the huge site would help if asked but certainly didn’t rush to anticipate guests needs. Perhaps this is because the manager spends all his time walking around the reception area and seemingly nowhere else. He should take a lesson from Aqaba. If you want to sample Jordan food at the Kempinski Dead Sea you will have to eat in your room. We did once and indeed it was excellent. But you have to wonder what the hotel is about when it has a Thai restaurant, an Italian restaurant and a European type restaurant, full stop, in the middle of Jordan. Breakfast {in the Thai restaurant!} was good but there are too many flies outside so you have to eat inside and swot the flies there. The headline sums it up.

This was the most idyllic place to end our trip! It was the most fantastic and refreshing change to the very poor Crowne Plaza in Petra. We had a wonderful room with a sea view. Unfortunately, you couldn't lock the patio door from the outside so you had to walk all the way around (minor issue) The setting and the pools were so beautiful.

The service was fantastic. They came around cleaning our sunglasses, offering refreshing towels and pieces of fruit throughout the day. We stayed mostly by one of the 2 infinity pools which was just what we liked. The sea was a bit too warm for us to be refreshing to spend all day in.

The business centre in the main building was fine though Skype worked only on one of 6 computers but even though it was 2am in the morning I was offered refreshments whilst there. The other business centre, was more like a back office and had been taken over by a conference there. I was not informed of this during my stay. However, the buggy driver insisted on taking me back to my room when I lost my bearings trying to get back from the main building.

One of the restaurants was under refurbishment and was temporarily operated in another one at certain times of the week. This was rather confusing especially since we were given conflicting information.

The major gripe we had was the number of flies at the place. Though nothing can be done to control them, what about the blue light fly catchers and something to cover the food? We were having a losing battle with fighting them off and got too frustrated and gave up eating in the end!

Whilst we were there, there was a huge conference going on and we were not warned that we might need to reserve tables for dinner so we were none too happy about arriving at one of the restaurants and not having a table until 10, though we managed to get through by having a drink...

The atmosphere was a little strange because of the conference, though I am not sure what the normal clientele is. The bars and restaurants consisted of groups making lots of noise and not quite so peaceful. Then the next night they presumably had a private function and it was like a ghost town.

We ate in the Italian restaurant both nights, because the other was just too empty for our liking. The food was very good. The breakfast was fantastic too with the biggest selection of everything including champagne.

Despite the few niggles, I would come back here recommend it as a fantastic place to stay.

As you can tell by from the many reviews and pictures on TA, this is a large, beautifully landscaped property. There are actually two separate resort areas with two separate lobbies: the Main Hotel and the Ishtar Villas.
Based on the TA reviews, we choose a room in the Ishtar Villas for our stay. The room was large with a beautiful bathroom and a small terrace with direct pool access.
There was complimentary wireless internet access in the room as well as soft drinks and beer in the mini-fridge.
Had all of our meals for a couple of days at the resort; it was all OK, but nothing spectacular.
Floating on the dead sea is an amazing experience, I would visit Jordan again just for this. It is specially stunning right before sunset. They also provide mud for you to apply yourself, make sure to let it dry completely before rinsing it off in the sea or at one of the many sowers on the beach.
We also visited the spa which is located in a modern and very impressive building, it has an assortment of pools and relaxation areas including a Thalassotherapy pool. We received very nice massages by the Thai staff.
The gym located in the main building was very adequate and was empty on all of our visits, except for the attendant.

The service here was incredible. You just had to think it and the staff were there! More like a 6* hotel. The rooms were huge and offered choice of pillows and room fragrances! An amazing hotel. The Dead Sea was a wonderful experience and this hotel catered well for a very relaxing and enjoyable stay.

After Egypt air lost our luggage, we drove out to the kempinski on the dea sea. This hotel is absolutely beautiful...much like a four seasons in it's decor and level of service. We enjoyed the sea, the mud pots on the beach, and a nice dinner at the Italian restaurant that night. Their facilities are truly best in class...all of the pools, down to beach shoes on the beach, this place is first class.

The morning we were due to leave, we talked to Omar, the night manager who started to get things going with our lost baggage. Omar made a ton of calls and kept us updated throughout his work to locate the luggage (found at the personal residence of an Egypt Air person) and coordinated a taxi to pick it up from Amman and drive it to the Hotel...all within about 90 minutes. We tried to tip Omar but he wouldn't accept it.

After spending a lot of time in traditional high end places...st. Regis, four seasons, etc., this place takes the cake!

Stayed 2 days in Amman at the Sheraton in the Tower rooms and thought that I had stayed in a super hotel, then I arrived at the kempinsky and realised that when someone gets superb service. From the security guard at the entrance to the members of staff I was made to feel that my experience at the KEMPINSKY will ensure that parting with my hard earned money will be a pleasure. Case in point, TV no volume so I call my Butler 15 mins later I am moved to a villa appt with private pool. The downside lol- there was only 1 TV instead of 2 and no DVD (who uses them anyway - brought my own stash of films on hard drive. Definitely coming back with the better half.
