“Good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2013

Good hotel, comfortable room friendly staff, enjoyable experience.
Had a similar experience to previous reviewer with x-ray scanner staff wanting one of the two bottles they could see in our case - but treated it as humour and they didn't insist any further. Bar prices are extortionate, happy hour was and the restaurants are expensive, preferred to eat outside the hotel when possible, as when this was possible the quality was very good and a genuine Jordanian experience.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2013

This is a somewhat challenging review as the hotel has many positives such as a beautiful spa and grounds but there are so many problems with it so here goes..

When you pull up to the gate you are greeted by a couple of 'goons' who check you are a guest and much like a night club bouncer that your name's on the list so you can come in. This immediately sets a rather intimidating tone to the stay. Then you pass to the next check point which is akin to airport security. You have no choice but to go through the metal detector and there is no explanation why you have to go through it. Obviously, Jordan is in a volatile region but some reasoning for why this measure is needed would be appreciated. Why not a sign stating the reasoning for this? Then your bags are x-rayed and again no reason is given for this at all. And at this point the problems for us really began..

Two security enforcers demanded that we opened our suitcase and that we show any liquid bottles. After some reluctance we opened our bag on the ground (my wife's clothes piled on the outside ground) and we produced a bottle of whiskey from the bag. This infuriated the guards and they went on to show us with great pleasure the x-ray with two bottles. Bear in mind, we hadn't even entered the lobby of this so called five star hotel and already we were on our hands and knees opening our suitcase on the concrete dirty ground. We then opened a second smaller piece of hand baggage with bottle of duty-free Bacardi and they (in raised voices) demanded that we hand one of the two bottles over to them.

My wife and I stood our ground and stated that we would not hand over the bottles and that we have stayed in other Moevenpicks (including in Islamic countries) and never been subjected to such absurd treatment. We had actually just stayed at the Moevenpick Petra where although there was security there was no attempted confiscation. I would add to that this is not Jordanian government policy and the Jordanian tourist board states " Alcohol is widely available at bars and hotels across Jordan and is also sold at supermarkets". Subsequently, I've had a look at the hotel's website and I can't find anywhere that states this one bottle rule is a policy. Although there is plenty on their website about receiving a "warm Swiss welcome". This welcome was neither warm or anything my Swiss friends would recognise.

So, after a stand-off that lasted about ten very awkward minutes we moved out of the security that would have made Guantanamo guards blush and on to the reception. I would add that we won this argument as there was no way we would hand over our possessions to them for "safe keeping".

At the reception there was no one to take our bags; again very odd in a self proclaimed world class resort. The receptionist was at best abrupt as I passed on my disgust at the security experience and there was certainly no apology. We were initially staying just the one night but decided just beforehand to increase to two and as such the bookings were under each of our names. The receptionist to his credit (but so he should) said that this wasn't a problem and also again to the hotel's credit upgraded us. I would point out that the upgrade was in my opinion not linked to the security problems as no mention was made of that.

The bedroom was really very nice and the bed was superbly comfortable and the mini bar came with about ten free soft drinks and this was a very welcome feature. The bathroom though was more of an issue and the tiles above the bath were covered in thick mold and there's no way that a bath would be taken there. Other than that though the room was of a good standard.

The hotel itself is absolutely huge and the outside decor is really stunning and in a traditional Jordanian style. The lighting outside is also very tasteful. The pools were very impressive too. Similarly, there was a lifeguard on duty at the small 'beach' side, which offered access to the Dead Sea.

The spa is a surcharge of 25 JD per day and it's probably worth that and we visited it both days. It's well maintained and offers a nice little bonus of free hot teas and apples. The only slight negative point is that some of the railings and ceilings had pealing paint and more mold. This wasn't a big thing but something that a five star resort should simply not accept.

The staff were a very mixed bag; about half would warmly great you but conversely half would not make eye contact and would walk past you. Again, this is further evidence that this is not a genuine five star experience.

Foodwise, we ate in the main hotel restaurant on the first evening and even though there was only one other occupied table, we were told that it would be a thirty minute wait for food. The alcoholic drinks were insanely priced and would make an Ibiza nightclub manager do a double take! A bottle of Amstel was 8 JD plus 23% tax and that's about £11.50. At those prices it makes it clear why the guys from Guantanamo were brought in. The food was fine but was again very expensive. A plate of small grilled lamb chops was 20 JD or £17. My wife asked for extra vegetables rather than fries and no extra veg arrived. Perhaps not a big deal, but in the context of the other issues, it just compounded the lack of an attention to detail and effort.

Day two, we ate in the outside courtyard and had two very nice chicken wraps, which were much better value at 10 JD. The breakfasts were okay, but offered no "wow-factor" and there was very little fresh produce. Goodness knows who invented beef bacon and even more amazing who deemed it acceptable to be on the hotel's menu, but a better option is surely available?

On the second evening of our stay after a enjoyable spa, we went to our room to find the chambermaid half way through his cleaning. He seemed puzzled to see us and said in broken English that this room was due for new guests and he thought we had checked out. We explained that this was not the case. We thought nothing of it until at about 10:30 pm the reception called to ask why we hadn't checked out? Not only did the receptionist get my name wrong, he was sure that we were due to check out. It was only after I explained the two separate bookings that the phone call ended. I would add that no apology was given by the receptionist for yet another 'issue'.

So there we have it. This hotel has the potential to be a stunning and excellent hotel, it has a great location and wonderful buildings but if I was the hotel manager, I'd urgently re-train ALL the staff to Moevenpick international standards. Get rid of this bizarre alcohol restriction rule, which I would add appears solely for the benefit of the hotel's profit margins and has no safety justification at all as claimed. And finally take a bit more pride in the small things like chipped paint etc. Then and only then will this resort really be five star. As for me, there's no way we will return even if Moevenpick offered it for free.

Dear Valued Guest,
I refer to your review of your recent stay at our resort and also shared your comments with my team, in order to investigate the various matters raised and take the corresponding remedy actions accordingly, in order to avoid similar shortcomings to our guests in the future.
I am sorry to read that your stay with us was marred by several deficiencies and would like to take this opportunity, in order to apologize for any inconveniences caused.
With regards to the security screening upon arrival, I would like to point out that this is a standard procedure, which must be adopted by all hotels in Jordan. While we do accept that our guests are taking a bottle of alcohol and some dry snacks into the hotel, we do not accept guests bringing along several bottles of alcohol and food items.
Please note that during only recently conducting market surveys among competing resorts at the Dead Sea, we found that our prices for food and beverages are very much in line with other resorts. Nevertheless, I have asked our Food & Beverage Manager to conduct a new survey in this regard. Should we detect major discrepancies, we would certainly look into the matter and take the corresponding remedy actions.
May I suggest that you contact me directly the next time to decide to visit the Dead Sea, in order to ensure that a renewed stay at our resort would indeed be a memorable experience.
Thanking you for your patronage and assuring you of our best care and attention at all time, I remain,
Yours sincerely,
Peter Hoesli

I only stayed one night in December on the way to Petra but it would be a lovely place to stay for a relaxing holiday with sunshine, pools and Spa. Spacious rooms and extremely comfortable beds!
Good for children with lots of outside space

Room Tip: ask for a room with a sea or a garden view

Service was good and spa was really excellent (although you had to pay 25 JD/day as a hotel guest to use the various pools). Really enjoyed watching the sunset from infinity pool. Food at hotel was expensive and we did not eat there. Otherwise, really enjoyed our stay there. Would recommend

Room Tip: Go for the standard room as you will spend most of your time in the dead sea/spa

The hotel is nicely laid out in a village style. There is a square with a selection of restaurants in although some are closed offseason. There are two other hotels and a small mall next door though so you can go to these for variety if you are staying more than a couple of days. We ate at the Grill (very good steaks) and Luigi's (average Italian). There is a belly dancing performance in the square each night. The hotel has its own access to the Dead Sea.

The staff were extremely helpful and friendly throughout our stay and the hotel is right by the Dead Sea Highway so handy for local sights.

We travelled in off season (December 2013)

The hotel is clean, well kept and the breakfast buffet was fantastic (dinner not as much). Great location, fairly modern and a beautiful, somewhat authentically decorated, foyer/lounge/bar.

What really stood out was the exceptional service. The staff was extremely attentive, always asking what they could do and went out of their way to offer us the best possible experience. They really went above and beyond and was some of the best service we've received.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2013

We stayed at the Movenpick Dead Sea Resort for 9 nights in December 2013.

The resort itself is enormous with plenty of facilities to cater for most types of travellers (pools, bars, gym/sports, beach, restaurants, spa). On check-in this can all seem slightly daunting but a morning wondering around the resort is enough to familiarise yourself.

Check-in was quick and easy. Whilst checking us in, Suhaid from Reception overheard us mention a sea view and promptly changed the room which had been reserved for us to one with a sea view without us actually having to ask. This is the type of service I would expect from a 5* hotel, so first impressions were good. A few days later, when we had a hitch with our booking at the Movenpick in Petra he made quite a few calls to investigate the issue for us and when the issue could not be resolved while we were still at the Dead Sea he personally ensured that we'd have a room once we arrived in Petra.

Quite naively, the plan was to stay at the Dead Sea as a base and do day trips to Petra, Wadi Rum, Amman etc with local tour groups. We were very disappointed to discover that this is not how its done and having already booked and paid for 10 nights at the Dead Sea we did not see many options.

We spoke to Amer from Guest Relations who went out of his way to help us. After we researched what we wanted he helped us call all the relevant parties to arrange a 2 day trip to Petra and Wadi Rum (travel, hotel and tours all had to be booked separately). This trip was the highlight of our holiday and we are very grateful for his assistance.

The breakfast and evening buffets are vast with a lot of variety. The Grill restaurant serves good food in very generous portions however I found it pricey.

The Al Khayyam bar in the evening, however, is exceptional. Serving delicious food surrounded by luxurious Arabian furnishings, everything we had from the menu was excellent and very reasonably priced (the coconut prawns alone are worth a trip back). The service from Ibraheim and his staff at the bar was both warm, welcoming and extremely professional. As a result we chose to dine here for the remainder of our stay.

Due to poor weather during the latter half of our trip much time was spent in the Zara Spa and the gym. The Spa offers a good variety of treatments with a minimum spend of JD100 for use of the Spa areas (otherwise entrance is JD25). For this you get two outdoor pools with great views of the sunset and a couple of small indoor "dead sea" pools. There are also several relaxation areas and steam and sauna rooms.

The gym is reasonably equipped with 4 treadmills, a bike and two cross trainers plus an assortment of resistance machines. Mohammed from the gym was very helpful in showing us how to warm up and stretch after our workouts. He was also happy to suggest/demonstrate various excersizes when asked. He even tried to teach us how to play tennis!

In summary the facilities offered at this hotel are not unlike most other 5* Hotels throughout the world but it was the exceptional service provided by a few individuals that really made our stay so memorable. I have already recommended it to a friend!

Room Tip: For a sea view you need to stay in the main block (zara, yara) but these rooms are smaller. This is...
