“Poovar Island Resort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2013

Poovar Island Resort is located on a beautiful property. A well kept, virgin beach and serene maze of backwaters are its best features. The beach is clean and the only people you will see there would be hotel guests and fisherman. The boat rides in the backwaters are a must. It was peaceful.

I enjoyed my stay but for a few things. The staff was nice and friendly but lacked the finesse of more, well-trained five star hotel staffs. The gardens were not looked after properly and the food wasn’t much to talk about. The live music performances in the evenings were lovely, though.

We took a two days package there, it was fun. The resort is good, spacious with lot of greenery. Food was ok, but not great. Restaurant had buffet dinner/BF and lunch. Staff was really helpful. Overall experience was good. We enjoyed a lot in the pool with poolbar!

Nice resort. Provides ferry transport from poovar jetty to resortfor unlimited times to the guests. One can enjoy by seating on arrival point at resort. Very relaxing and beautiful place. Great time spend with ur loved one. Around by people still alone. .
I don't advice to stay in floating cottage. Not worth spending money. Well, land cottages are quite nicely decorated with all modern emenities and comfort.
Good to stay at.
The food is excellent. Service is good and as the hospitality of staff.
CM members, dont go for floating cottage. Will waste ur nights at affilated resort. Better stay at floating cottage at Ashtamudi resort

Room Tip: Choose land cottage only.

Stayed for 13 nights in land cottage. Following previous reviews had open minds but did not not experience some of the reported horrors. Standard room was very good. Ours was in the trees but this kept it lovely and cool. Room was a little tired in places but kept very clean by housekeeping staff daily. Resort itself is isolated and can only be reached by boat but this was not a problem with boats every half hour and on demand if required at night. The beach opposite the resort was accessible by boat on demand but is a working fishing beach. It is a bit cleaner at the northern end but as there is no shade and the beach shelves steeply into the Arabian Sea it is not ideal for swimming. The village to the south is worth a look just to get a flavour of local life. The town of Poovar is a short walk from the jetty and is a typical local town without any tourist trappings. The resort is well maintained with a good sized pool. Meals are taken in the Tiffin restaurant, with room service available, and from day one it was made clear that if you did not want too much spicy food it would not be a problem. They were willing to cook to your requirements, but then why visit Kerala and not try the local dishes which were superb. I even came home with recipes from the chef for a few of them. Sadly there is no dedicated bar/lounge area to relax in after dinner in the evening with a coffee or beer, but new management did take this on board and said it would be considered. We did not stay on a floating lodge but others who did reported a good experience.
If you have previously visited Goa and think this will be the same it is not. Alcohol is not so readily available due to government restrictions but beer is available in most cafe/restaurants if requested.
There is a good beach at Kovalam about 30 minutes from the jetty in a taxi or Tuc Tuc which is more touristy with craft/handicraft shops and plenty of cafes and restaurants. A further 20 minutes takes you to Trivandrum which is a large city.

Overall we had a very good relaxing holiday in Kerala at Poovar Island Resort. The staff were attentive and keen to help in any way they could. Wi-Fi is available in the reception area.

Room Tip: Some rooms are upstairs and get a bit more of the sun beating on them as well as the stairs proving...

We spent a 2 days in poovar Island resort. We need to take a boat to enter / exit the resort. The cottages were decorated good on back water. The rooms were good and clean. The problem is the water from the taps are not so clean and tidy. The overall experience staying here was good and would certainly recommend others. The restaurant and the service are also good. The boat tour to backwater was a good experience.

Very nice place. We visited the place for a lunch on way from Kanyakumari to Trivandrum.
Typical beauty of Kerala ,back water make you out of world from jetty to resort itself.Journey in motorised boat from jetty to resort mesmerised you by scenic beauty.Resort is also very beautiful with excellent typical beauty of Kerala.
Restaurant serves excellent food.
Though we have not stayed at property,we visited one of cottage, which was very well decorated on back water.Missed the opportunity to stay at island due to non availability of booking at last moment.

We spent 4 nights at Poovar. We started out with a floating cottage which is a good experience. The cottages are rustic and could do with a good makeover, but being on the water made up for this with many wonderful photographic opportunities. Over the weekend the numerous tourist boats could become a bit of a nuisance but on weekdays it was not too intrusive. The downside of some of the floating cottages is that they are double units on one pontoon. These have inter-leading doors and the walls are paper thin. On the third night we had a rather noisy neighbour move into the next door unit and we asked the manager to move us to another unit. Only land cottages were available and the one we were in was very well appointed and contributed to a very pleasant stay. The food was good but I was personally a little disappointed that there were not more Kerela cuisine on the menu. The Ayurvedic spa experience was very good and very reasonably priced. Overall a very pleasant experience

Room Tip: For floating cottages ensure a single unit is allocated away from the hotel jetty which is at the ce...
