“expected better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2010

This hotel is average. I am puzzled by its excellent reviews, are people posting for the more expensive sisters Alba Royal or Alba Princess, or have people got very low standards?
The alba royal should just scrape a 4 star. It has some positives, but is let down greatly by being extremely overcrowded.
If you expect a lounger by the pool, then you must reserve a towel by 8 am, I detest this practice, I do not go on holiday to have to wake up early to reserve a bed. On average i estimated 25% of beds were occupied at any time but towell covered, where was everyone? It seemed the norm was for some selfish people to have a bed at both pools and even the beach at their disposal all day. Can you be in 3 places at once? We spent the first 3 days unable to get near a pool and were forced down to the beach. Eventually we joined in the sunrise towel debarcle. (The beach was quiet and pleasant with a very warm and fairly clean sea. ) There is a crazy pool and a quiet pool. The former is a serious accident waiting to happen. The water is shallow but jumping of bridges, artificial cliffs and even tables and loungers at the edge of the pool all go entirely unchallenged. The music is also often inappropriate. I dont really appreciate my young children listening to f this f that in eminem or whoever nor alice, alice who the f- is alice, you get the idea? Slides were fun but descending by inflatable seems the order there.
The quiet pool was much cleaner and more civilised, we were able to enjoy a few relaxing days there, arrive early tho.
The indoor pool was fantastic, very refreshing, clean and made a great retreat, the jacuzzi was good too.
Food was average, we lived off bread ,soup and breakfast cereal ( what you get in a 2 star) I would have been happy to try more of what was on offer had it not been lukewarm/ cold.. Food at beach bars is better and ensured freshly prepared food. Drink quality varied lots. Beer was generally good ( tuborg) but fruit juices were disgusting, fizzy drinks were often flat or very weak, I do not really like light brown fizzy water being passed off as pepsi! In some bars it was better than others.
Service was generally poor, waiters in restaurants work 14 hour shifts 6 days a week and have an overcrowded hotel to please. They are not a happy bunch! You will be ignored in favour of another table that tips. I believe in tipping after good service, not for good service, I would recommend either going against this principle or complaining (which is very effective, even better than tipping!) Serving yourself at the restaurant is unpleasant and stressful due to crowds.
Hotel entertainment was good, the animation team work extremely hard and the kids club staff deserve a medal, how they work keeping children entertained 12 hours a day is magnificent, but cruel.
Room was dated and basic but comfortable, AC was excellent and was quiet enough to leave on and get to sleep. Beds were firm and comfortable. We were in a quiet block so had no sleep problems at all, be careful not be in a central block if you fancy an odd quiet night.
Hotel grounds are well landscaped and maintainted.
The nearby sites at Side are impressive and worth visting, costs about £1.30 each way on a dolmus outside the hotel and takes 20 mins or so.
The alba was clearly once a high class place, it is well past that now. It is on the verge of being run down and suffers from having too many people being crammed in. I know August is a busy month but I have never experienced staying at hotel that is so obviously over saturated by guests. Were there too many 3rd beds in double rooms? Had the hotel had the numbers it was designed for this review may have been entirely different.
Would I go again? Probably not in its present state, but with a few small considerations this hotel could improve greatly. Eg pool supervision and hot food Also I paid much less last year for a far superior hotel.

i travelled with my son and partner and had a fantastic time, the rooms are spotless the entertainment staff are awesome, there is always something going on for adults and the kids, the entertainment at night is really good and varied. the food is not so good at night time but you can eat in the other 2 a la carte restuarants once a week and the bar food is good in the day. the bar staff are great and get to know you really quick and know wat you drink there are 2 outside large pools one quiet and one noisy with water slides. and they have their own beach which is spotless and the sea is shallow and warm so safe for kids. they had a beach party when we were there which was presented to 5 star quality which ended up with a foam party and everyone in the sea.. the kids club ,,,, well you cannot fault the girls that work in there my son is six and went in it lots of times and went for tea with them every night at 6

We travelled as a party of 5 adults and 2 teenagers. This hotel was ok but by far the worst we have stayed in and certainly not 5star. A few points to prove this are 1) You had to pay if you wanted bottled water from the bar 2)The only spirits that were free were Vodka, Gin and Brandy all others whether imported or not had to be paid for, 3)Safe had to be paid for, this id the first time this has happened to us on an all inclusive holiday, 4) Food was ok but not a lot of choice but maybe we were spoiled at the Papillon Belvil last year. 5) Staff spoke very little english, we cheered if we actually got the drinks we ordered.6)One night in the Reception bar (where the air con was non existant) the bar staff were spraying customers with sparkling wine and on another occasion in the pool bar two waiters actually had a fight behind the bar !!! On our bus ride back to the airport we spoke to a couple who had stayed at the sister hotel next door the Alba Royal and their hotel was totally different, They could have any spirit, got free water, free safe. Why things are so different in the same chain of hotels is not easy to Understand. 4 out of 5 adults had dicky tummies for almost all of the holiday. I would definately not return here, We have stayed in The Hemera in Side, Papillon Belvil in Belek and the Titanic in Lara Beach and would advise you to try one of these instead, the Alba is definately a no no.

We always read the comments on Trip Adviser before travelling, and when reading what was said about this hotel, in particular the animation team, we were really looking forward to our holiday. Our flights to and from Antalya were bang on time and the transfers to and from the hotel were speedy. We were met on arrival by a porter and escorted to reception where we received a cocktail whilst checking in. We hired a safety deposit box which was 3TL a day for our stay -more reasonable than other hotels we have stayed in. I could write pages of positive comments about our stay as we thoroughly enjoyed everything about the resort, but I will summarise the positives (and the very tiny negatives!) as follows:

Food and Drink - 24 hour All inclusive, Breakfast good but no bacon ! Some strange offerings but there was something for all of us. Lunch, you can eat in the restaurant, the pool bar or Beach bar, we preferred the Beach bar as there was a lovely breeze and they had nice pizzas. Dinner served in the Restaurant, plenty of choice, grilled meats, oven baked lamb, vegetables, potatoes - salad bar, children's buffet, and a choice of 2 soups; plus a huge selection of fruit and cakes for afters! Bar service was ok and most of the time you got served quickly, whatever nationality you were, however having read a previous comment about tips, we found that this worked for us especially at the busy times when the shows were on.

Rooms - we had a family room which was great for us, one tv which had1 English channel- BBC world news, but you're not in Turkey to watch TV anyway ! Rooms cleaned every day. Minibar replaced with soft drinks daily.

Swimming pools- Quiet pool, which we didn't use and indoor pool which was lovely in the mid afternoon heat. Also a wellcentre which we didn't use, but seemed to be reasonably priced. There was a sauna but in Turkey in August we didn't feel the need to use this !! The main animation pool was great fun, there was music and activities all day long, without it being too much - you were encouraged to join in but left alone if you just wanted to watch. My only negative here is the sunbeds. During our first week, there was a mix of German, English, French and other European countries, the second week seemed to be predominantly English, yet you had to be down at the pool by 7.30am if you wanted decent sunbeds, I was down by 8.00am every day and always managed to get a couple of beds near the paddling pool, but I rarely got an umbrella. If you wanted plenty of choice you would probably need to be down by 7am. There are signs that say you must stay with the beds until 8am but most mornings this did seem to be ignored. Having said all that, it was very pleasant to sit in the sun at 7.30am and it was very warm, you could get a coffee from the restaurant and read a book until 8am.

Shops - there are a selection of shops only 2 minutes from the hotel and the prices are okay if you are prepared to barter. There are 2 chemists if you need to use them, which we did, very reasonably priced and knowledgeable. A dolmus to Side stops right outside the hotel and costs 3TL to the centre of Side to see the ruins and the shops and bars.

Animation - before we left the UK I read all the comments about animation and thought that they must have been made up - however having spent 2 weeks with the animation team, I have to say that they are the best, hardest working, friendliest bunch I have ever met in over 20 yrs of holidaying. Big big thanks to them for making a good holiday into an unforgettable one. Special thanks to Kemal for taking my two boys under his wing (One is 14 and one is 7 ) and helping them get involved and make friends. Also to Mido, Ozzy SInnan and Olga they really make you feel like you are special friends. The activities during the day were plentiful and fun, although the 4pm football seemed to be a grueller! The evening entertainment was excellent, from the shows- Lion King and Mamma Mia, to the wonderful Gala night and the unforgettable Beach party night. Don't miss the bingo -3 Eurois for 1 ticket but its good fun and the prizes are good too. Our only other negative -which isnt the hotel's fault, was that tit was extremely hot and humid at night, and it was quite uncomfortable as the evening entertainment was in the open air ampitheatre. I felt sorry for the animation as they performed in costume under spotlights with no fans !!

Kids club - we didn't really use this but it seemed to be open for long hours during the day, however we watched the mini disco nearly every night and were singing along by the end of our holiday, my 7 yr old liked the dances ! The mini club staff also worked really hard.

Mini Zoo - my boys (and Dad) enjoyed visiting this a few times during our stay

As you can see, our positives far outweigh the negatives, we were so sorry to leave and are still sad to be home, we are pricing this hotel up for 2011 and I am sure will be going back again.

Big thanks once again to all the staff from the porters and reception staff, to the maids, bar staff and restaurant staff and especially to the animation team and Kemal

We went as a family with 2 small kids. Many reviews have hit it on the head, especially the “Very nice hotel but not really a 5 star” review. Just a few things to add to that:

Good:
1) Great evening entertainment, which was varied and included an enjoyable 'carnival' night(don't do the bucking bronco) and a beach party (including fire show).
2) You will never go hungry and could live on just the salad alone! Great beer and wine too!
3) The kids club really looked after our kids and were really helpful - they joined in with the kids disco most nights.
4) The pools were clean and there was a quiet one if you did not want to be disturbed.
5) There was also plenty of day activities organised by the animation team.
6) Service was always quick and polite, for the most part.
7) Great fish restaurant by the beach had one meal we all enjoyed - the Italian could have benefited from having a kids option.
8) Location was good, in my opinion - there were plenty of tourist type shops outside the hotel (MUCH cheaper than nearby Side).
9) The hotel grounds were generally very clean and well kept.
10) The air-con in the room was great and much welcomed.

Not so good:
1) I did not appreciate being asked to spend £1.50 per DAY for a room safe - this should be included. Fortunately, the last guest had left the safe key in the safe so I was lucky!
2) The rooms are definitely dated, although clean with good maid service. One thing I hated was the fact the soap was in a dispenser, like in a public loo - a 5* hotel needs to have much better than this.
3) The food could have been more varied, maybe with a 'theme' night. Also some seemed to have been possibly 're-cycled'. That said, we had no stomach problems.
4) Some of the male animation staff seemed more interested in just chatting with certain 'buddies' than the general hotel guests at large, although the female ones seemed much friendlier.
5) The pool sunbeds - get there early or don't get one. The hotel had signs saying towels would be removed at 8am - in all the 2 weeks we were there only once did we see this happening! For example, I once saw a Russian take 5 sunbeds, but at least 2 were not used at all that day!
6) The slide had signs telling people not to use waterbeds on it, but most people, even the animation team, did - I am not saying this is wrong, just that the hotel seems not to enforce any rules (see sunbeds).
7) Some of the things in the grounds seemed rather dated, such as signs.
8) The toilet by the main pool was down a set of stairs and the floor was always wet and slippery - an accident waiting to happen.
9) Although some things are included, the choice for alcoholic drinks was limited and some cocktails were too sickly sweet.
10) When you arrived you were given a 'credit card' in case you wanted to pay for extras, such as certain cocktails. This seemed to go against the idea of 'all-inclusive'.
11) The bingo night is a night we didn't join in - asking 1 euro for a card is not on (when you have kids who all want at least one each)! This felt like just another way of making money.
12) Bring a hearing aid if you want to hear the TV - max volume is set far too low.

Other advice:
1) Remember to take lots of Euros, not Lira.
2) Take some books to read while you are waiting on the sunbed in the morning (to reserve it).
3) Bring a hand fan or something to keep you cool in the evenings.
4) Be careful about health and safety - I do not think these words exist in Turkish!

Overall, we had a good holiday, although I had slightly higher expectations, based on previous reviews. The time before we had gone to a Papillon hotel in Belek, which was similar although slightly better in some respects. I think we would like to try one on Lara beach next time.

Amazing staff who are willing to please. Excellent choice of food. Has it own private beach with sunbeds available all the time. Entertainment is amazing. The beach party was awesome. Mama Mia, the Lion King and Grease stage productions where out of this world. The entertainment team really made this holiday, although there is a "quiet" pool if you don't want to be disturbed by the entertainment team who work from 10am to 11pm. Then into the 24 hour bar or disco which is on until 3am.
2 pools, get up early for your sunbed and stay with it until 8am. You can't reserve a sunbed before then.
Avoid the obnoxious, ignorant, grumpy, speedo wearing Germans. Give as good as you get and they then steer clear of you.
What a wonderful holiday. I will be back next year either to this hotel or one of the 2 sister hotels.

Just got back from our first visit to Turkey, had a great time. If you are English and want to eat Englsh food and be miserable, then this isn't the place for you!!!!! Hotel is very well kept just keep an eye on the marble floors that can get a bit slippy from time to time (I did a couple of impressions of Robin Cousins) Food good with plenty of choice, some strange concoctions but on the whole plenty for everyone. Rooms clean and adequate, maids call everyday and so does pop man ( a small tip gets you extra pop for kids) Pools are great (1.5m deep though so small kids need to be kept an eye on) We spent all of our days around the main pool (music and entertainment all day) the animation team do a great job keeping everyone entertained. If you want a sunbed be prepared to get up at 7-7.30. Beach is fantastic, sea really warm and shallow, plenty of sunbeds, food, drink and showers available. Gets humid at night which can be uncomfortable whilst watching the entertainment, however 24 hour bar is slightly cooler when air con on. Air con in rooms keeps you cool. Animation team work really hard and are very nice and friendly. Don't use taxis to get around use the Dolmus easy and cheaper.
