“Great views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 weeks ago

We stayed here for a couple of days while passing through Monte Verde. The owner and his son were very friendly and assisted us with booking some tours and picking out restaurants. The views here are incredible; from just outside your door! The place is dated but it is clean The owner cooks breakfast in the morning. Eggs, toast and fresh fruit, coffee and juice.

We had requested a clean, secure but modest hotel but this might have been secure but it wasn't clean.
Very run down hotel and has no TV, no air condition or fan. The curtains are see through. You can hear people snoring in other rooms
Bugs were on the bed. I did not sleep for the two long nights that I was there. There is nothing quaint about this hotel. It might have been cheap but it equaled dirty.
The only positive is its view. But you do not sleep outside
Even if it were free-avoid this hotel.
You have been warned.

Room Tip: No good rooms-the worst in the back.

The hotel, owned by an elderly German gentleman, is small and suited our needs. Located up on the hill, it has a wonderful view (amazing sunset). Rooms are basic - bed, bathroom, hangers to hang some stuff and towels. No TV, internet ready. Fresh coffee and delicious fruits and eggs for breakfast in the morning. Hotel is a very steep hike to the town, but cabs are aplenty and cost about $3-4. This was exactly what we were looking for - had a great experience.

The room was one step from a hostel, and not a good one. I was on the back side of the hotel, so no sunset view. There are two on the backside so insist on the front otherwise you look at the back of a hill. Met a scorpion 3" from my face, on the shower curtain. I was lucky. The lady in the next room was stung by one. Not close to anything, have to take a taxi for everything because it's on the side of a steep hill. At least you can feel safe, the police station is a rocks throw below on the hill.

Room Tip: Only chose the front side! Wifi only works on the patio or in the dining room.

Sending best wishes to Robbie and Papa! My 2 girlfriends and I stayed at the Sunset Hotel and were absolutely thrilled with our experience! Robbie was working reception when we showed up and there was non-stop laughter from the time we got there until the time we left! Our room was clean and comfortable and just what we needed! We settled in then went for a walk through the foliage at the back of the hotel! It made for a wonderful start to our visit in Monteverde! We went into town picked up some wine, cheese and crackers and came back to the hotel to sit in the grass and watch an amazing sunset. We were having a lovely chat with Robbie when Papa showed up (a real delight). Robbie recommended Morphos in town for a late supper. I am told the food was absolutely amazing! The next day we started our adventure with breakfast cooked and served by Papa who is so warm and wonderful! Robbie had booked us a tour to Selvatura Park (which was absolutely amazing and well worth it! Thanks again Robbie). Papa made sure the bus was coming to pick us up and held is as we were still rushing to get ready (it had been a late night). Papa and Robbie had let us leave our bags in our room as we were leaving that day after the tour.
This place is so wonderful not only because it is beautiful but because of who works there! Robbie and Papa wishing you all the best! Thank you for making our trip absolutely wonderful! When we are back in Costa Rica we will be for sure be coming back here!

My boyfriend and I really loved this place. The father and son who run the hotel are so kind and welcoming - I read this before hand in a lot of reviews and it was true. The location was very convenient, the rooms were simple and clean and just what we needed, the breakfast was great and also included and the price is incredible.
They helped us a lot with restaurant recommendations, brought us wine glasses and kept some food in their fridge.
We met other travelers on the porch and had a great night drinking wine under the stars.
You do feel safe because there is a police station very close.
If you're going to Monteverde, definitely stay here. We felt lucky to have :-)

Room Tip: every room looked great.

This is a great place! Very comfortable, wonderful hosts, and the best value in Costa Rica. Couldn't ask for more! Breakfast is great, location is perfect, and view is wonderful. We did a horseback riding trip arranged by the hotel that was not good - but I think if you just make sure that the trip does not include paved roads, it'll be ok. We also did a night hike arranged by the hotel that was a real highlight and I'd highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Any room is good
