“Don't stay here!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2013

I was there recently, and my experience was not a good one. The room was clean but smelly, and our room was the size of a shoebox (we had 4 people staying in it, and we had a full bed with bunk beds, and there was no room for our suitcases and no room to walk around the room). There was absolutely no hot water in the two days I was there. I traveled with a group, and some of the other rooms discovered scorpions in their showers. There was also no air conditioning or television, and our room had a window right next to the bed where people would nosily walk by outside. The service was friendly, but the food was of poorer quality, often cold or stale. The location was a little difficult to find - on a gravel road some distance away from the main road. The restaurant for the hotel was a distance away from the hotel - down a hill, though the food here was good. Overall, I would not recommend this place - there are plenty of other nicer hotels in Monteverde.

Room Tip: Choose a different hotel.

Stumbled upon this hotel & were very pleased with Grace & staff. Huge room with hot water, gorgeous garden & hummingbirds galore on site along with a beautiful breakfast all at a great price. Walk to Dikary for fantastic pizza. Hospitality couldn't be better. Gracias!!!

Our stay here was acceptable. The rooms are adequate and clean, the views are beautiful and the bathroom is small. We did have hot water and a hair dryer here, which is more than I can say for some other places in Costa Rica. The breakfast in the morning was fine and the dining area (with wireless internet) was a nice place to sit and relax in the evening. The owners were attentive and kind. There were some bugs and the rooster was crowing early, but we were not in Costa Rica to sleep! It was nicer than some places we stayed earlier in the trip, but do not expect a typical US hotel.

This hotel is down a quiet dirt street and has a lovely view and a nice little patio area where you can see lots of birds. The included breakfast was very good and the room was large and clean. The bathroom was small, but adequate. It was within walking distance of both Monteverde and Santa Elena. Grace, the owner, is very friendly and helpful and booked all our tours for us. There is a computer for guests if your like me and don't travel with a laptop or smart phone. If you can, be sure to get a second story room to enjoy the views!

I just had a very pleasant stay at this lovely hotel. Was it a typical Hampton Inn in the USA? Absolutely not .... but that was not what we were looking for to begin with! This is a small, family-owned and run establishment. They also run a restaurant in town where we ate the first night .... then I was so surprised to see Grace at the desk later at the hotel after talking with her at the restaurant. Our room was clean .... yes, there were dogs barking and roosters crowing at all hours but that was part and parcel of Costa Rica. If you want to see the country, then you have to be somewhat flexible. Was the bathroom luxurious here? No, but it felt clean and we did have some hot water (which we had absolutely none at other places!). I find it hard to believe that people are so picky that they want perfection when traveling in other countries ..... this place was clean, safe, and the family who runs it were absolutely charming. Grace made great recommendations for things to do and was most helpful. The outdoor patio is beautifully landscaped and was a delightful place to eat breakfast or drink a beer after a long day. And if most travelers are as tired as we were, you can sleep through most anything! I would recommend Hotel Jardines IF you can accept the fact that most hotels in this price range in Costa Rica are not the stereotypical Hampton Inn .... it is a true taste of Costa Rica, which is what I wanted to experience.

Room Tip: Other reviews say to ask for a 2nd floor balcony .... I didn't see these rooms, but I would look...

Monteverde is a beautiful place to stay, but don't go to this hotel. Rooms are old, the bathroom is awful.
Insects are in the rooms (dead and alive).
Breakfast is simple. You have to come early, or else it's cold.
Staff is friendly.

We made a reservation for a single room with two beds at the Jardines. When we arrived we discovered the quality of the rooms. Very small, dirty (girlfriend found a cockroach in a bed) and very humid (smelled like moisture and fungus). The room was dark and not well lit. My girlfriend who is asthmatic had difficulty breathing in the room, probably because of all the fungus spores in the air there.

So we had to complain and change the room. The service was comprehensive (reason why i'm not giving only one star) and they moved us to a small bungalow. However : we were in december and the place was VERY cold with no heating. Monteverde is very windy so all night long the wind made a lot of noise as if the roof of the room was going to collapse, and we had branches, scraching loudly at the window. And the place was extremely humid.

I have been to at least ten different places in Costa Rica on a one month trip, and this was the worst experience.

I am also very skeptical of all the nice reviews here (they strangely all sound the same). All of them praise the breakfast... it is the usual Costa Rican breakfast... nothing different. The service was ok at least, but not exceptional either.

Could this be that someone is making partial reviews, friends of the owner maybe ?

Do not trust the good reviews here. There are way better ways to spend your money in Monteverde !
