We spent 2 nights at El Sol in Santa Elena to visit the Monte Verde Cloud Forest. What a unique and special place! First, there is no sign for it so you have to look for the yellow painted rocks and yellow sun! When we drove in onto the dirt driveway, we were told to honk our horn and Javier (the son of the owner, Elisabeth) would come out from his own house and take us to our cabin. Instead, Javier's son came out! An amazing 10 year old boy with full command of the English language. So enchanting! He walked us over to Elisabeth's cabin where we were hugged hello.
Elisabeth suggested we have dinner 'in' which meant home cooked meal by a neighbor. We were delighted when 2 girls arrive on our doorstep that evening with covered baskets of food, trailed by 2 small dogs and a cat. The food was great! We stayed in the large cabin the first night which was really cool. You are up in the middle of the sky.. looking out at the views and then the clouds. Very very cool experience. It felt like we were really out there in the wilderness, but had creature comforts.
We met Javier the next morning. He seems to be the one kind of taking over the daily functions and guest interactions from his mom Elisabeth, at least that is how it was when we were there. He is amazing! Such an interesting family and story which you can find out for yourself when you go:)
He is partner in an adventure/guide company with naturalist Andres Alvarado called Forest Alive and he set up our full day with exactly what we wanted to do. He is an amazing consultant! We took 2 tours with Andres - one during the day at Selvatura Park which was so interesting. I learned so much about flora, fauna, and animals. Then we went zip lining in the afternoon. Then a night tour with Andres which is not to be missed! It is amazing how many animals you can see at night. We saw a sloth, white fox, honey bear among others.
We switched cabins for the second night because the large one was not available and even the small cabin was great. A different view and feeling but still rustic and unique. A big surprise was the pool on the property! We didn't get a chance to use it because we were so busy and it wasn't that hot, but it was really neat.
Javier and his family were so so warm, wonderful, and helpful. It was sad to leave. Great great place to stay for an authentic experience.
The small cabin is fine for 2 people. The large cabin is bigger and has a deck instead of a patio. C...
