“HIGHLY recommend this place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2013

For only $55 a night I was very skeptical! However, what a pleasant surprise! This place was in a perfect location just a 10 minute walk in to the center of town, you don't need a car if you're staying at this place. My partner and I had a horrific experience with our rental car and Renzo couldn't have been more helpful. I don't know what we would have done without him. I love Monteverde and El Viandante was exactly what I was looking for. It's a great value with wonderful owners, very clean and very comfortable. I am definitely booking this place again on my next visit.

This hotel was truly memorable. The hotel is conveniently located, especially if you have a car. It is a short distance from the city center, and if you don't have a car, then it is still okay, as mentioned it is a 10-15 minute walk, and getting a cab is easy in Monteverde. The hotel had all the conveniences and the rooms were airy & big. The best part of the hotel are the owners, when we went we did not meet Grace as she was out of town, but Renzo was a perfect host, and went out of his way to make our stay amazing. We did go on a hike with him and it was truly a highlight of our stay in Monteverde. The breakfasts were great, and our family had all four rooms above the lobby, which also had a little sit out outside the rooms, so it felt like we had our own private area. There is no view from the rooms, but there are great views from the breakfast area. Would highly recommend and definitely stay there again if we visit Monteverde again.

Hotel El Viandante was one of our top favorite and truly memorable stops during our 30-day auto trek through Panama and Costa Rica. Following a long, bumpy ride to Monteverde, being greeted by a warm, smiling, charming, supremely accommodating host and hostess (Renzo and Grace) in their crisply clean mountain-top hotel was a delightful reward. The fresh knotty-pine paneling and attractive natural stone floors were lovely reminders of our Northwest roots. The more-than-ample breakfasts were healthy, tasty and varied during our three-day stay, and we were quite happy with the plentiful cups of rich, dark local Costa Rican coffee! We highly recommend this 4++ star retreat to anyone seeking comfort, engaging company, excellent service, very good food, and a great Tico home-away-from home experience! An amazing bargain for the price!!

Location: First off, the hotel is located about a 10 to 15 minute uphill walk out of the main town. It requires a bit of effort, but takes you away from the noise and gives a gorgeous view. The road is lit and paved almost 95% of the way. I do NOT think this location is a cause for concern because most sights around Monteverde will require someone to pick you up and drive you there. If you don't want to walk, you can grab a taxi for a couple dollars. If you have a car rental, there looks to be ample parking. If you are a hiker, there are lots of paths in the area for exploring!

Rooms: The hotel is essentially a massive house, so each room is a little different. We had two rooms (2 queens and 1 queen) in the basement, both with windows covered by dark curtains (blocks the light out but a bit dowdy). Rooms were VERY spacious. Featured retro decor with wood panelling with a summer camp feel - I felt like I was in a cabin. It was certainly not hotel standard (nor did I expect it to be), but was entirely comfortable and clean. I think a little change in the decor would make the hotel feel a little less worn. The bathrooms we had were small, with a tiny sink and stand up shower (hot showers, no issues with water pressure). Because we were located right under the breakfast area, there was some stomping and clatter from above whenever 7am rolled around.

Service: I think El Viandante hits all the big points on service. Any deficiencies in the rooms are more than made up for. Grace is a wonderful friendly owner who really cares about your comfort and enjoyment. I never met Renzo, but I understand he will do personal tours and hikes with guests. Wifi and computers are both available, as is a mish mash of boardgames at the front desk. Breakfast is a highlight. There is a typical continental spread and a fruit plate, but Grace will cook up something different each day. One day we had fresh corn bread, sausages and cheese; next day was scrambled eggs and ham with toast. I really appreciated her effort; made for a great start to each day!

We stayed there or two nights and had a wonderful time. Breakfast is freshly made and very tasty. The rooms are big and clean. But the best: owner Renzo and his wife will help with all your requests. They booked several tours for us on short notice. Everything just worked out perfectly!! A wonderful time, you get more than you money's worth!

Hotel El Viandante was the best hotel (for 3 days & 2 nights) of our entire week long stay in Costa Rica!!! The owners, Grace and Renzo, are incredibly accommodating and made our stay smoother than we could have hoped. Grace's tour recommendations were wonderfully honest and helped us pack our trip full of exciting adventures and attractions (including restaurant suggestions for every meal we asked). The rooms were gorgeous and well-lit from the wall of windows facing the mountains (great view). The bathrooms were spacious and clean and the shower had good pressure and water heat. Even the complimentary breakfast changes from day to day so you don't get bored of the same continental spread every day like other hotels. What a difference it makes! Last but not least, we have to mention the FREE hike into the primary rainforest offered by Renzo during our stay. We accepted the offer and off we went on 6 hours of the most memorable experience of our hiking in Costa Rica. Not for the out of shape! We will be returning and staying here again. It was over and above what we would expect at twice the price they are charging. A diamond in the rough!

Room Tip: All rooms seemed equally accommodating and the hotel is located in a quiet part of a quiet town. Any...

Renzo and Grace were excellent hosts. They gave us great recommendations on activities, and better yet, they arranged all the activities for us! They are definitely why I gave this place an "excellent" rating, although the rest of the experience was great too.

Our room had wood panels, and it definitely had a cabin-like feel, which was refreshing. But it was definitely cleaner than we expected! In addition, the price is hard to beat! We may have been located under the dining area, so we could hear everything above us starting at about 6:45 AM, which was fine since we wanted to get up early each morning for activities. However, if you want to sleep in, then earplugs may be helpful.

The hotel is located slightly out of town, so we would walk into town to eat and then usually take a taxi back to the hotel for $2 (as it was a steep walk back to the hotel). Grace and Renzo also gave us excellent eating recommendations.

If we make it back to Monteverde, we would definitely stay here again.
